The witness mark on your ramrod should tell you all you need. I actually have 2 marks, one mark is for when the bullet is pushed and just seated on top of the charge ( I use 2 pellets) and will go no further. The second is when I give a little more pressure and seat the bullet on the pellets to where the pellet is actually up into the underside of the sabot cup, for me it's usually 1/4" and it always comes out the same. It works great and the groups are awesome. Just be sure not to crush the pellets. It works for me so I use it. Everyone has a diffrent method that's what is so fun about our sport.

When I first was taught how to load, I was taught to "throw" the ramrod against the ball until it bounced - no longer giving a dull "thud". I did that for a long time, then saw others just pushing the ball down firmly on the charge. I have been doing that ever since and feel it's a better idea.
For one thing, it doesn't take as long. For another, if you were to use pellets, I'm pretty sure you could break or crush them. And thirdly, I feel you'll get consistent accuracy as long as you load with consistent pressure.
