777 Crud Ring Experiment
I am planning a range session on Monday and if I have time I am going to do a little experiment.
My Magbolt has never had a problem with the dreaded 777 crud ring. I have shot as many as 10 consecutive shots without swabbing (depending on the bullet)before having trouble seating a bullet due to fouling, not crud ring. I also have shot upwards of 40 rounds without the breach plug getting stuck. My theory is that the breach plug design of the Magbolt, which allows a fair amount of blowback, may be the reason for the lack of a crud ring. My son's Optima gets a crud ring on every shot with 777. That breach plug has almost no blowback. Over the past 2 weeks I've been in contact with BPI customer support on this matter and they sent me, free of charge, an Optima/Apex BP to try out in my Magbolt. The length and the threads and the face design are the same as the Magbolt's. The only real difference is the 209 socket is closed all the way around, i.e. no slot as the Magbolt has. I plan on shooting the same load using both BP's and see if it makes a difference. I will also be noting how much fouling is getting back into the action and whether it gums up the bolt. If everything goes as planned, I will report back early next week. I hope everyone has a great weekend. |
RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
Most all of my inlines suffer blow back from the breech plug. You want blow back, shoot a Black Diamond XR... WOW!!
I have also noted a reduction in a hard crud ring with them. The worst inline I have for a crud ring would be my Knight Disc. All of them will get fowling but normally I can load up to three shots without swabbing or suffereing accuracy problems. With the White rifle and conicals, I can shoot all day if I so wish without swabbing or a crud ring problem. I will be interested to see what your results are... |
RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
You guys might be on to something as my stainless Omega has the worlds worst crud ring with 777. My rifle has no blowback that I can detect. I cannot shoot a second shot without running a brass brush to clean out the heavy ring that is left. It still makes a ring with the .25ACP conversion and Winchester small rifle primers. Not as bad as with the 209 standard primers but still more than enough to limit the second shot possiblility. Needless to say I shoot very little triple seven. My Omega loves Black Mag'3. (You probably have heardthat before).

RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
interesting theory but I'm not sure it's correct. I have a CVA Optima and it loves 777. Crud ringhas not beenan issue with my rifle. I usually run a wet patch after every third round, but the third round doesn't go down the barrel with much more difficulty than the first. My last range session, I shot off 21 rounds before removing the breach plug to clean it and it wasn't difficult to remove then.

RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
Chris,
What type of BP grease/lube do you use? Another theory I have is that using antisieze for a BP lube may allow some of the antisieze to get into the combustion chamber area and help keep the crud ring from forming, at least not as bad. It doesn't seem to have as much credability as the BP design theory though. The BP blowback would have a similar effect as the lower power primers in that it would also tend to allow the primer pressure to leak as well. Then again, maybe you got lucky and your rifle just likes the stuff. My Magbolt sure does. My son's optima even gets a crud ring with BM3 just not as bad as 777. |
RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
I have found that I get better accuracy at the rifle range by swabbing between shots,in 3 different rifles.I use one alcohol patch up/down.After I flip the patch the first time I can't feel the crud ring on the second pass.So for methe crud ringis easily removed although it is an extra step. The only reason that I put up with the 777 crud ring is that 777 has given mevastly better accuracy than American Pioneer, Shockey gold,or Pinnacle.I dont like the sulfur smell with Pyrodex, although it also gives good accuracy.I have not yet tried Black Mag 3,but I intend to if I can find some at Friendship.I am not willing to pay the Hazmat feeto ship 1 can.

RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
When I'm shooting for max accuracy, I use a spit patch between shots to keep things consistent. When I'm working on hunting loads, I like to see how many shots I can run through it before reasonable accuracy goes south or it gets too difficult to load. This way I know what to expect if I need to do a quick reload without swabbing in the field.

RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
What type of BP grease/lube do you use? For the breach plug threads, I use Slick 50 One grease. |
RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
have any of you tryed the 209ml primer? you ow it to your selves to give it a try.what do you have to lose?

RE: 777 Crud Ring Experiment
209ml primer? New one to me. Been using the Remington clean bore primers. Going to be trying the Winchester 777 primers at the range in the near future.
