Important question...rookie
My neighbor just called to inform me that he bought a .50 black powder. This is not an in-line gun. Without doing the proper research he poured some powder in, forced a bullet in and tried to shoot it. Only the blasting cap ingnited. He wasn't sure if the powder went off or not, so he poured more powder in and forced another bullet in then realized that he had two loads in the barrel. I have no experience with these guns (and he has even less) and I know that it is dangerous to try and fire the weapon as is. So any advice on how to empty the barrel safely? There is a plug of some sort at the back of the barrel that I assume is screwed in. My neighbor has tried removing it with a plyers (don't ask me why) but couldn't get it to budge. Is it safe to put the barrel in a vice and try to back this plug out with a wrench? I want to help him out and keep the situation safe. Please let me know if you have the answers. Thanks.

RE: Important question...rookie
OK first off we can defuse the sitiuation and make it safe for all. take the barrel off the stock and soak it in water for at least 1/2 hour. Then you have to go to a sport shop and buy a ball/bullet puller to remove the two bullets and then clean the barrel real good and start fresh after getting some loading help.

RE: Important question...rookie
I shared your advice with him. Thanks.

RE: Important question...rookie
The breech plug on the back of the rifle is not removable in MOST traditional rifles. There are a few of them that you can take the breech out, but they tell you that in the manual that you read. Pittsburghunter gave good advise, soak the breech in a pail of water and it will not hurt to pour water or betteryet spme oil down the barrel as well. The oil (even cooking oil works)will help the bullets side back out the barrel. The idea is to kill the powder charge and get the powder too wet to ignite. Then they need to get a ball puller and pull both balls out of the barrel. They might also want to get a CO2 ball discharge unit if they do not want to pull the charge. Two balls can be a devil to get out although it can be done. I would also suggest they get a good strong range rod with female ends on both ends, and a T-handle and cleaning jag. Put the T handle in the one end and the ball puller in the other. Many times the ramrods that come with the rifles are not meant to do all that heavy power duty. After you get that ball puller screwed good and deep (as deep as you can get it) then hook the T handle in the rafters, or under your feet or some place that will not budge, and then back away nice and clean holding the rifle.
What probably happened is, they might not have cleaned the new rifle before loading. Many of them come with packing grease in them and must be cleaned. Then you have to make sure after you clean the barrel that the barrel is dry of any moisture and free of oil before loading. Also have your friend pop a couple #11 caps through the nipple before loading. This will clear the fire channel and allow the spark to get down and into the powder charge when they finally get to the point of loading and shooting. |
RE: Important question...rookie
wow... reading this makes me want to hide under my bed. First off, did your friend load the rifle with BLACKPOWDER or pyrodex? Wow this is a scary issue. How much powder did he use? Buy a ball puller, tap it into the ball and then start to screw in and then pull. It will take some force and even some pliers or a ramrod puller to get it out. Do your friend a huge favor and send him our way or atleast buy him a manual for that rifle.
|
RE: Important question...rookie
I wouldn't wait long to get the ball puller. The wet black powder can be corrosive in your barrel. Call around to some of your friends that shoot muzzleloaders. One of them may be able to put you on to someone that can help.

Then take the gun to a COMPETENT GUNSMITH, preferably a MUZZLELOADING GUNSMITH, and askhim to remove the two loads. Then ask him to show you &your buddy how to load a muzzleloader correctly, and how to draw a charge.......!! Considering your friend's level of competence regarding ML arms, DON"T y'all try to pull these charges yourselves! |
RE: Important question...rookie
i would take the vent insert out and do as above, soak it over night in water,THEN ,take it to gunsmith.my gunsmith charges 10 dollars to remove them.

RE: Important question...rookie
Let's not get over excited here. Remember lots of non regestered users read our posts. I find the originional poster to be very smart. He knew he needed help. Instead of chewing him a new orifice lets get that riflle shooting.

RE: Important question...rookie
I agree that the right thing was done by asking what to do, and applaud asking.
I think you should definitely take to a gunsmith, especialy if black powder was used. Water will work, but I think a light or penetrating oil would be the better answer to killing the powder trapped between the two bullets, if the bullets sealed well and were lubed it would be hard for the water to penetrate. Again, Gunsmith is the answer. |

Hopefully this neighbor gives-up this sport before he goes any further. He seems to lack common sense..... that being a very important 6th sense for partaking in muzzleloading. If that were my neighbor, I would ask to see his gun supply/cabinet/safe inside his home. Should you find any guns pointed in the direction of your home, I would ask him/her to store them in a different fashion -- better yet... sell them all for safety reasons. |
RE: Important question...rookie
well this was interesting.
does yer neighbor do anything else thats 'um' "unusual" ??????????????? might be someone ta lookout fer early |

RE: Important question...rookie
There are very experienced m/l shooters who have double balled and then shot the weapon. To give these green shooters as much crap as a few are here will turn more people off of the sport.
How dare you ask what's in a gun closet because of this error. We are not perfect and I think again both the guy with the problem and his bud did the right think. I think my advice would be fine as well if you soak the barrel water will come in both ends and make the powder inert. How dare you tell these folks they have no right to shoot m/l rifles. I started totally on my own as well and though I have not doubleballed I could have. Hell I could do it tomorrow it happens. The fact that this greenhorn caught it before he shot the rifle and knew something was wrong tells me they are the type of people I want in this sport. The next time you feel perfect let's see you walk on water. |

The man did not make a simple mistake -- he made three mistakes - even before squeezing the trigger. He did not research the sport. He let himself become mentally distracted while working witha firearm. He did not load properly by double-loading. I hope this guy moves next door to you Pittsburgh Hunter. I also hope he sets-up at the range in a stall right next to you. You-two deserve each other! |
RE: Important question...rookie
Oh, did I hurt your feeling knowing you may have one? I mentioned nobodys name but felt a few people out here treated this person a bit unfair.
Personally I should be offended but judging from some of your same unthought out posts I will leave it at that. In the one year I have known you, you have gone from a great source of knowledge to a person who thinks they are the source of all knowledge. TripleSe7en I see you weekly giving people who do not deserve it a load of crap. I have tried to defend it saying it is mis-communication but at some point you have to realize you are anti social to many people. Please try to be more respectful to new people asking questions as far as someone like me I don't give a hoot. I am just here for fun and to learn a few tricks. As I said before let's see you walk on water.. |
RE: Important question...rookie
Heck we've all done some silly stuff learning what we know, We've managed to survive and if we can pass on some of what we have learned the "hard way" it might save someone else. I've personally shot a double charge second charge didn't go off until it cleared the barrel, was really strange trying to figure out why there was 2 holes in the target. Now here is a question just because I don't know and it might work. What about the CO2 setup that is made to screw into a nipple thread and see if it pops out that way. I'm not sure it would work on a double charge but it's food for thought. And YEP he's welcome to set up in the stall next to me, maybe I can help him learn the sport.

RE: Important question...rookie
rj, I forgot about the CO2 dischargers. That might be just what the guy needs. Exellent post.

RE: Important question...rookie
Lets see Mr. Dimwit... you wrre clearly talking to the guy that mention gun closet (safe)... that is me. So it is very evident who you were trying to chastise. I am not anti-social -- but I do get upset at dimwits like you that cannot read my replies properly -- cannot comprehend them either. RE: Important question...rookie
BECAUSE YOU LIED & continue to do so every time you show up here. What the heck would I need to lie about? I am just out here talking about guns..... Wow, geezom crow/ (I don't even know) |
RE: Important question...rookie
I am very very sorry folks. I am very sorry to the person who started this thread and I hope they got the gun cleaned and shooting.
I should know better but sometimes you get sucked into being someone other than yourself. I swear I have not lied to any of you about any of my posts. I also am sorry for my behavour tonight on this thread. It was not how I normally act out here. |
RE: Important question...rookie
Pittsburgh Hunter lies to folks when he tells them other posters like myselfare wrong about something -- when they really aren't. You lie to folks saying the man made one mistake - when he made three mistakes. That's a blatant lie & you're trying to cover it up.
Do I need to go through your history here at Hunting.net?? Folks that don't know how to read/comprehend -- then say something wrong because they cannot read/comprehend it correctly -- are habitual liars due to their shortcomings. Apologizing for your lies/mis-comprehension/reading disorders is fine& dandy. But you are doing just the opposite -- acting innocent. You are a real loser PittsburghHunter. I'm done here. You ain't worth my time anymore. Take a hike! |
RE: Important question...rookie
Yeh, thats me your typical loser with 5 healthy kids two in college. Two on the brink of starting school when they know want to get to do and a very active 2yo surprise that is the love of my life.
I don't know the cause of your anger or really care about it I come to this site to learn or teach what ever the situation and am very secure in my own being. I don't need to call people names and such but have at it call me a few more I like the attention. |
RE: Important question...rookie
Actuaully, I just thought about your last post. Go through my history here and post all the "lies" and what not.
You are a piece of crap that need to be taken down a notch or two you are so high on yourself. |
RE: Important question...rookie
i think all of us make mistake,i know i have. topic was about someone that put 2 loads in gun. i saw many at range do same thing over 36 years, heck i almost did it a few times but i always marked my ramrod ,so i checked.lots never did mark there ramrod.i pulled many balls out of guns at range over years to find out that only i load was in gun but the shooter was convinced they put 2 in.people get worked up and make mistakes or think they did.are we stupid to do things like this, well, i dont know but its good to know that we have people on here that can help out guy or gal like this.i have more fun watching and helping shooters at range than shooting my hawkins.you would not believe the things that happen, some funny ,some serious.
