What cleaner do you use to swab your barrel at the range when using bore butter? I know you can not use a petroleum base because it will break down the bore butter. I heard that the No. 13 bore cleaner will cause flash rust. Would the citric acids in cabelas all natural citrus solvent break it down or should I be fine using that. It is a good solvent but I don't know if the acids will effect the bore butter. I am sure there isn'tthat much citric acid in the solvent. What do you all think or use?

T/C #13 would be the swab of choice if you have to swab at all...

I believe Sharp Shooter is referring to a rifle bore that is "seasoned" by the application of bore butter. They use the bore butter to protect the rifle against rusting and to facilitate shooting projectiles with a reduction in fowling and better accuracy, so the claim goes. The concern is if a petroleum based product was used to swab the fowling from the bore, this might also remove the seasoning effect of the bore butter.

In this case the correct swab solution would be a non petroleum based substance such as T/C #13, simple soap and water mixture, or an even more common fluid is your human saliva. You should still dry patch the barrel after the fowling swab.

If you were to smear additional bore butter into the barrel as a cleaning agent, I think the only effect would be is clogging the fire channel and producing a lot of misfires.

The patch for loading the ball is coated with bore butter. This in itself will pick up and remove fowling to a degree, when you load and shoot. As well as to continually season the bore.

Sharp...rubbing alcohol works...If I want to get fancy I add a little Murphey's Oil soap...If I am at a shoot, all day shooting...I go with alcohol/hydrogen peroxide and Murphy's...1/3 of each...After I'm through I go with straight alcohol and lube bore.

The reason I don't use 13 is because alot of people have problems with it causing flash rust.

I've never had T/C #13 cause flash rust in a bore.. but M.A.P. will cause flash rust. It's because it contains hydrogen peroxide.

So I take it number 13 works very well at the range and shouldn't rust if you run a dry one after it and start shooting again. The Thread is at The Muzzleloading Forum under Accessories. (spelling)????

I have a bottle of T/C #13 and have used it on rare ocassions. Never had any flash rust with it. The #13 is all natural. I do not see how it could cause flash rust. Grante if this was all you used to protect your rifle from rusting, you are going to rust the gun. But as a swab compound it will work just fine (if you like that kind of stuff). Just be sure to run at least two dry patches after a swab of #13. I've had lots of misfures. That's why I swab with isopropyl alcohol.

TC makes a family of cleaning and lubing products.
They have been jointly developed, tested, and in use for decades.
#13 is TC's product to be used in conjunction with bore butter expressly because it DOESN'T affect the bore butter.

If / When I do swab between shots, I use #13...have probably used a dozen of their pint bottles of #13 over the years andhavealso bought and useda couple dozen jars of TC #13 cleaining patches already pre-saturated with #13....perfect results.

IMO, you need to take stories like the one you're referring to in total context.
We really don't know what happend in that instance.
We don't know if it was a result of a reaction to something else that had previously been in the bore.
We don't know if the bore sat cleaned too long beforebeing lubed.

What is known is that #13 is a proven,effective cleaner.
It has been in use by untold thousands of people for decades.
They, like mefor 15+ years,have had theintended results.
