my hunting buddy's house was broken into last friday night, and all his hunting guns, camera's and computers were stolen. The oddthing was that his new ml was left behind. They took the scope off but left the gun. Odd?
What would the reasoning be for this?

Well that is strange for sure.. but you can never understand a thief. Instead of working for their own property, they would rather profit from the labor of others by stealing. I have no time or respect for a thief. I hope your friend kept good records and serial numbers for the items they stole. Perhaps the police can recover some of it, or at least arrest those responsible.

I know this is a little like shuting the barn door after the horse got out but I always put an old hunting license behind the butt stock cover into the stock. That way you always have proof positive that you can ID your gun if stolen. And whats the chances some crack head theif is going to look in there. Just and Idia I thought I'd pass on. Mike

Really a shame, sorry to hear of your friend's loss.
As far as the ML, the low-life theives likely figured that they would not be able to black market the ML so easy.
Good reminder folks, invest in a Quality Gun Safe. It still won't guarantee they don't take the entire safe (I've heard of walls being cut and the safe taken through the hole in the wall.) but it's better protection that nothing.
Everything I own of any value is locked in a safe that is also bolted into concrete flooring.

Start looking for the stolen idems at the local pawn shops. Personal I think they should ban them.
I had my 12 foot alum fishing boat stolen about 3 years ago. It was sold to a pawn shop who didn't ask for the seller to sign the active regsetration on the back. I recovered the boat because I had the serial numbers, and the person that bought it from the pawn shop had a call from the police when he attemped to get it placed in his name at the sec. of states office.
[:@]Now here is the kicker. The pawn shop owner got off scott free since he asked if the seller to him owned said idem. The poor guy that bought it from the pawn shop got time in jail and comunity service for reciveing stolen property.
A fellow I used to work with also found his guns and fishing equipment at a pawn shop too.
I second the safe, record serial numbers, take pictures bothmovieand still. Most of all don't buy stuff from pawn shops.

Great idea's. There is one thing that can have a great impact on your chances of being robbed greatly reduced. Don't brag or show people what you have. It's unfortunet that we can't share our passions and good fortunes with others but envy and jealousy are wicked task masters, and people do love to talk. Best just keep quiet. I even tell my kids not to brag about what their dad has. I think it's time for that talk again.
Decals! Unfortunetly I never use them.
