Speer 300gr. Gold Dot HP?
I'm thinking about tryingthe Speer 300gr.GDHPin my Kodiak. Barne's Bullets work good in my muzzy but they are too much to spend on compare speers bullets. What I like to know is, they saythat these bullets are for 45cal handgun but are .451 diameter like the barnes bullets that I've been using. Can I used them in my muzzy with the harvester sabots. The Speer's bullets are .451 like the harvester sabots too. Has anybody use this combination or bullet? Any other sabots that will work with the Speer's bullet? Any advice for me before buying these bullets would be appreciated.... Thanks in advance.

Yes you can use them. I have shot the Speer Gold Dot in a couple different sizes and they worked real good. I personally like Hornady in bulk projectiles better then Speer. Some of them shot good, but could not be pushed too hard or they sprayed all over the place.

The Spreer Gold Dot is a very good bullet. The 300 grain bullet has a BC of 232 and the ballistic look really good even out to 200 yards. The bullet is bonded and doesn not come apart. The bullet was built for the 454 Casual, but it is not longer offered in .451, it as been redesigned and is now offered in .452. The 250 grain Gold Dot also in .452 will be an outstanding deer bullet and it is bonded also. I am thinking that your Kodiac is probably a tight barrel you will probabaly need to purchase MMP HPH-24 sabots or Harvester regular sabots. If they do not work then the "crush rib" will but another sabot will be available in April that will work. Good luck - I have velocities and ballistic charts at home if you would like them. One final thing - the Barnes is a great bullet but probably un-necessary in most applications for muzzleloaders, besides being expensive. If you are hunting elk or thick skinned animals the Barnes may be one of the best bullets to use from a ML, I use Nosler Partitions for Elk - but I am heavy weighing my options with the 300 Gold Dot Spreer Once again good luck... |

I was shooting them out of my Wolverine with 80 grains of Goex 3f. The did shoot fine, just that some of the Gold Dots spread out. Looking back over my notes, I see these were .429 diameter so I need to do more checking on the .452's.

Sabotloaders,
Those groups are tight. That's what I like to see out of my muzzy. I was wonderingif a.452 bullet fit in a .451 sabot or do I have to match them? Thanks for the charts. |

In most cases a .451 sabot will handle a .452 without a problem. What sabot are you using now to handle your .451's? How do you feel about the effort required to seast this sabot? finding a good fitting sabot for tight bores will not be a problem soon... mike |

They will - I was shooting them and an experimaental sabot last month - I really think you will be OK... |
RE: Speer 300gr. Gold Dot HP?
Mike - how hot of a load were you using to push the crush rib sabot?

I was shooting 100 grains of t7-2f that day. I did return later and shoot some 110 grain loads. I also recovered the sabots and I have one here in my hand. They do not look stressed all. All the petals are there and the cup has lost it's shine but no real heat problems... I have included the target.... ![]() |

Were you or are you asking for a link to the bullets... if so http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000213974 Remember these are .452 with a different HP than the .451's had, but they also have a higher BC. I can get them a little cheaper at a local vendor but not much.... |

They still make a 300 grain .451 flat point - sort of like the old 30-30 bullet. It really shoots well for me, but is is not bonded. The few that I recovered from the soft clay bank I shoot into really looked great. Really decent mushrooming and the lead was not stripped from the copper. A friend of mine shot a meduim sized black bear sow with one from a CVA Hawkin last spring and dropped the bear pretty dead. Can not imagine it would not be good for deer class animals. |
RE: Speer 300gr. Gold Dot HP?
Speer are pretty standard bullets at my local reloading supply store. FWIW I bought a box of the Nosler 300g .429 hollowpoints and they are just so-so as far as hitting the target. I have no data as to what they do to beasts. These are not the Partitions they are pushing today I would love to try some of them.
Sabotloader have you shot any of them? |

I haveshot the 300 grain Nosler Sporting Handgun Bullet. It really did shoot well for me - I shot it early on in my attempt to find the right bullets. I do not remember much information other than they were a great alternative to shooting the 44 cal Partition. I never did hunt with them. I still have most of the 44 cal partitions I bought, because I made the switch to 45 cal Noslers Partitions. My experiance with 44's is pretty limited although since I got this Omega I may start experimanting with them again - goodness knows I have a bunch of 44's both Hornady and Noslers sitting here. |
RE: Speer 300gr. Gold Dot HP?
My box of speer order got here yesterday, My wife put it away and didn't tell me about it till tonite. Guess, she didn't want me shootingon the weekend. Well, very surprise it got here pretty quick. I can't wait to shoot it and see how it groups out of my muzzy. I'll let you guys know how it went.

RE: Speer 300gr. Gold Dot HP?
I have never really gotten the .429 bullets to shoot as well out of .50 caliber in-lines as the .451/.452. Used to think it had something to do with the thicker sabot; but the 50/40 200 grain Shockwave has blown that theory out of the water!

Totally agree on both points - I am shooting just plain old 200 grain XTP's and the are shooting really well.... I need to stop shooting them I am really getting attached to them.... I still have good collection of 44's that i have not shot - although! the problem shooting 44's for me might have been the older sabots I was shooting. I have not tried any recently with new polymere sabots.... |
