Which is it guys? Concerning breech plugs. I have a flat one in my CVA Staghorn. I have a shallow concave in my Black Diamond XR. I have the Grand Canyon deep,in my Knight rifles. Which ones are best for pellets? I was told the concave were better for loose powder as the powder gathers in there right on top of the flame from the 209 primer, where the flat ones have to channel the flame through the flat base with the narrow hole into the center of the pellets.
I have always wondered about that. By the way, my Black Diamond XR with the concave hole shoots pellets excellent....

The concave ones allow a more full burn -- starting with the pellet nearest the breech. The empty space allows ignition to reach the entire bottom of pellets where the flat plug creates an inside-out burn -- hence the hole in the middle of the pellet. So in essence, the concave plug creates a hotter, more even burn with pellets. That is also why I get more plug seizures with concave plugs than flat plugs using loose powder.
Loose powder becomes more packed against bore walls than pellets -- which are sometimes bore diameter-undersized. As a result of being right against the bore wall, more ignition back-pressure occurs... hence more power/energy there. Kinda why all the powder & bullet manufacturers allow 150 grains with pellets -- but not with loose powder. I bought the concave Omega plug almost two years ago & only used it for my theory testing one weekend at the range. Ever since then, I've opted to use the flat plug.

I bought a TC Encore 209x50 on December 31, 2005. It came with a concave breechplug. I wouldn't think that was an old type, but it is what the gun came from the factory with. Works great with pellets. Haven't tried loose powder yet.

I was at the local gun shop today and they had a third version. It was dished with a wider flat about a 1/16 wide on the rim. I think it is made this way so you will not crush pellets.

I shot pellets today out of the Black Diamond XR which has a concave plug. The pellets ignited excellent using the Winchester Primers. I guess if it ain't broke, no need to fix it....
Thanks for the explanation.

Not that it matters, my Remingtons and the A&H all have concave, dished out, faces on the breech plug. I know a lot of the modifications the Encore/Omega breech plug has gone through are to alleviate Underclocks infamous "Crud Ring" withT7. With these concaves I do not get the "Crud Ring" but I am shooting loose T7. There is some specualtion that TC will unvail another breech plug at the "Shot Show" coming up soon.

Here are the 3 breech plugs. starting from the left #1 was original that came in my Encore which is just about flat. #2 is widedeep dish and #3 is the one thatI just pulled out of my new Omega I got that hasn't been fired yet. So that is atleast 3 different plugs. The flat on#3 is 1/8" wide which would supportpellets better.
