New Green Mt. Barrel

The Green Mountain fast twist 50 cal Stainless barrel was waiting for me this afternoon when i got home from school. I really felt I needed this barrel to replace a 54 cal 1/48 twist barrel on my oldRenegade, but being the old baseball coach that I am - I decided a double switch was in order. I put the new stainless ina 50 newer Hawkin that I had - moved the good Hawkin barrel 1/48 to the renegade. Both barrelsonly took a minor amount of inletting and they were in. Even though the old Renie barrel is1" barrel - the 15/16ths Hawken went in without a problem (ony a smal bit of inlettingto get the under rib in the stock. At a later date I will probably add a little fiberglass bedding under neath the barrel. Nowit needs to be nice this weekend or at least semi nice so I can get out and shoot this new stanless.

That is a nice looking rifle you have there... In fact it looks like the ones I have. If it shoots as good as mine, I am sure you will be very pleased with the set up... My 1-28 twist likes 100 grains of Goex 2f and anything 250 grain or better...

sabotloader,
"Sweet" verynicel@@king. I hope it shoots as well as it looks! I don't have any stainless barrels for my Hawkens or Renegade rifles, but after seeing your rifleI might have to do some shopping.
Are you going to add a peep to the Hawken with that front fiber optic sight?

cayugad 02-07-2006 07:07 PM

RE: New Green Mt. Barrel

Sabotloader did that Stainless of yours come with the fiber optic sights? Mine came with a standard adjustable sight.

Yes it did and I really like them even has a front ramp sight. They really line up well the front beed fits into the rear site just perfect - you do not have to bury it into the "U" so you really have a good view of the target. The rear blade does not obscure anything - I really thought I liked TC rear sights but this is a lot better, except for the windage control - no clicks just loosen a screw and move.

I forgot to mention Green Mountain did not charge any shipping the sale price was the price - surprised me... and I almost bought a used 1/48 barrel on e-bay for near this same price...

Encorman

No I will probably stay with the current sights... I know the peeps might be easier but I do not like them in the low light of a timber canopy - so I'll probably stay as....

sabotloader,
You just poured salt into my open wound. I'm currently bidding on a .54cal, 1-48" twist barrel for my Renegade on ebay[:@]
Can you tell me more about your deal?

cayugad 02-07-2006 08:03 PM

RE: New Green Mt. Barrel

well this is not good..

I might have to call Rick at Green Mountain Barrel and ask him why my two rifles did not come with the fiber optic sights... Although I do like the ones on it, but I could see fiber optics better.

First off I got to tell you it was not my fault that i bought this barrel - it was all Cayugad's fault - i just finished explaining to my wife why Cayugad is the evil guy here - "he made me do it" - so I won't go into anymore here.

But! it was a good deal and it is a good barrel I just finished cleaning it - it is so smooth in there I had to drop a bore light in to verifiy there were riflings....

Here is the information:

http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/

This thing is way cool - might be a little tight - along the lines of a TC bore, but I got it handled....

sabotloader,
"Thank You" for the information. I checked it out and it's awfully tempting after seeing how nice your's turned out. I'm the current winning bidder on the barrel on ebay, so I'll have to play those cards out 1st.
You just had to post a picture didn't ya? Is this what Cayugad did to you too:D

Encoreman.. not wishing to cause you distress, but this is what your Renegade will look like with a fancy Stainless Steel Green Mountain Barrel on it.. Pretty nice :D

This is in no way meant to influence you into making another purchase. In fact I tried to talk Sabotloader out of one. At least that's what I'd tell his wife. :)

Not to cause a problem but these williams are good ones, my iniatial reaction is far better than the the TC's... I really think you would like them. The front bead is a little larger piping than TC's so out there in the long yardage area the are going to cover more - I am guessing right now 3" @ 100...

RE: New Green Mt. Barrel

I will have to call them and see what kind of deal I can make with them. I would like at least one of the new Stainless to have the fiber optic sights...

Cayugad,
I've seen this picture before, but I didn't look at it close enough to see that it was a S.S. barrel. The barrel looks a little dark in this picture and maybethat's why I missed it. It sure does look good and tempting....you sure can't beat the $$
I still want to get a .54cal., 1-48" twist barrel for my Renegade. I have so many 50's and only 1, 54cal. Flintlock roundball rifle. I want to play with the .54 Maxi Balls and otherconicals.
Now the S.S. barrel is 15/16" and the Renegade stock is 1" How is the fit? I know that were only talking about .03" clearance on each side, but is it very noticeable?
You guys are something else!

Not a problem 15/16ths into a 1" barrel channel. There is a very narrow slit along each side of the barrel... This is my 15/16ths in the Renegade...

sabotloader,
Good picture......Thank You!The fit looks just fine. I'm going to take my Hawken 15/16 barrel and drop it in my Renegade stockand see what it looks like.

The only problem I had when I did the drop in is the under rib was a little to long - I ended up inletting the under rib into the nose of the stock. I see a couple of advantages - the square under rib sits in a square inlet - therefore no left and right movement can occur. I am thinking about dropping a bit of fiber glass beeding material under the breech and just in front of the wedge - it really does not look like it is needed but I need something else to do... I love tinkering - someday if i ever retire again - but then I will not be able to afford to do anything - dang

Sabotloader-I see a box of Nosler's in the picture.Do they shoot well for you?I got some samples of the SHOTS and they worked Ok.I just bought a box of .451/250's from Gander, and I have a few Nosler sabots as well. What powder charge would you use in an Omega?90/100gr 777/2f seem to be OK so far for me.

Chasam60

I am currently using 100 grain t7-2f, but I am shooting 300 grain Noslers @ elk - actually those are .458's and I use a MMP .458 sabot.

For whitetail I was using Nosler260's, but I think I am switching to Speer .452 - 250 grain Gold Dots this season they have impressed me and are not as expensive - but I do shoot 110 grains t7-2f with these, but I am sure 100 grains would really be good....

They really shoot great for me. There are actually two types of 50/45 cal sabots out there. The older ones with a smooth cup are Harvester the newer ones with the stepped base are MMP's - the older harvesters load a little easier with .452 bullets - but the Noslers a .451 so they work well.

Good luck...

Other than laying a 15/16" barrel in a 1" barrel bed, has you actually conducted a range session ofshooting itthat way?
What eliminatesbarrel movement if it's not snug in the barrel bed?
Does the wedge pin fit as it's supposed to with a lower wedge pin tenon?
Is the hammer alignment for a 1" barrel still aligned OK for a 15/16"?

Inquiring minds and all that...

Great questions RB!

It really looks good and seems to fit well everything is tight...

Other than laying a 15/16" barrel in a 1" barrel bed, has you actually conducted a range session ofshooting itthat way?
With this particular gun I have not, but I have made this same conversion before into a Hawkin 54 cal stock. On the particular conversion I did bed underthe breech plug and about 3" of bedding in front of the wedge to make sure it did not move. I anticipate I might do the same here at a later date - I really do not think I have to, it is so solid (there is no movement)I am sure it will be fine, but I like to tinker so I probably will.

What eliminatesbarrel movement if it's not snug in the barrel bed?
The lug on the breech plug is tight in the tang ther is no left and right movement there. The wedge is in the under lug snugly - it has to be driven in the last 1/2" and I inletted the under rib into the stock. The Hawken under rib was about 1/4" longer than the previous Renegade barrel. This inletting does not allow left/rigth movement either. If I have a problem a bit of fiberglass in the stock would take care of it. Really do not Think it will be neccessary.

Does the wedge pin fit as it's supposed to with a lower wedge pin tenon?
The way it is inletted (the barrel) it does. With the ram rod removed I can get no movement up and down from the barrel and no movement left and right.

Is the hammer alignment for a 1" barrel still aligned OK for a 15/16"?
It is actually a little bit better than the previous Renegade alignment. I think I could even install a taller non-TC nipple and it would still have good alignment.

lonewolf5347,
I appreciate the offer and I might go for it. I want to wait and see if I win the .54 barrel on ebay 1st.
I'll send you a PM, if I decide to go with the S.S. barrel.
You make the S.S. barrel decisionmore tempting. Are you related to Cayugad or sabotloader:D

can a stainless barrel take to rust brown or will it rust with the LMF chemical?
I'm not sure, but my gut feeling is no. The stainless is a real low luster it almost reminds me of a parkerized finish. I originally thought I would end up spray painting it black - but I really kind of like the looks of it. Fiber optic sight are certainly a blessing for me and my old eyes. These Williams that come on it are not click adjustable, which I would prefer, but they are so easy to get a clear sight picture with I really like them...

Wish you had thought of the $50 dollar deal before i bought this barrel... I would have gone in on that...

you can never have enough guns.. today I looked at a NEF Huntsman .50 caliber. It has a 12 gauge combo package to it. The I realized the shotgun was modern. Good thing it was not black powder orI would have hauled that home with me...

I looked at a NEF a couple of weeks ago in Spokane. My problem is I really do not like the looks of the NEF, Encore, or the Optima, they all look the same to me. Just do not like the stock design... It reminds me of the Buckawaka or what ever that name was, and I can not even rember who makes that one. I know looks should not be the top characterstic of choosing the a gun - but I can not get use to it.

Sometimes it is a real pain to be selective...
