RE: Some thoughts on effective ranges for roundball

Original eldequello

I think any velocity over 800 FPS or so would permit the round ball to do this. The 230-grain bullet fromthe .45 ACP with a muzzle velocity of 825-850 FPS will usually go completely through a person......
The .45 ACP (230 gr) at the same velocity of a .45 roundball (128 gr)has 80% more momentum, 80% more energy, and 80% more sectional density, and is more capable of penetration than the .45 cal roundball.

I am reminded of the natives who, as the legend goes, were able to make breast armor by weaving reeds which were sufficient to decrease the .38 projectile's energy to prevent lethal penetration. Of course a .38of the same weight and velocityof a 45 RB has superior sectional density is more capable of penetration, retaining more energyafter the rib cage is pierced than the .45 RB.

So we are once again back to the idea that shot placement is a lot more important than energy in making a clean kill.
When using a roundball at the greater end of its effective range it seems that's all that is important. I would say that the two most important things when using large bore projectiles is momentum and shot placement, and that shot placement becomes more critical the less momentum the projectile possesses.

Happy Hunting, Phil
