I need some answers please CAYUGAD.

Ok i finally got cleaning stuff and bullets and all that fun stuff. I was gona get Hornady sst 250 grains in 50 cal. They didnt have them but they had the T/C Shockwaves which are same thing but i go them in 200 grains cause thats all they had, and i got some 223 grains 50 cal aerotip powerbelts. Now with the shockwaves how the hell do i put the bullet in the sabot its confusing. And any ides for a replacment ramrod???

RE: I need some answers please CAYUGAD.

The 200 grain Shockwaves come with a blue sabot. The bullet does not appear to fit into the blue sabot all that well, they kind of spread the petals don't they. Well all you can do is dump your powder and put the bullet in the sabot. Then start the sabot into the muzzle.I found you have better results if you use a shock wave loading jag on the head of the short starter and the ramrod.

You got a real greenhorn there Dave! This could end-up being a long thread helping this newbie to the sport.

Welcome to the ML World A.D.D.Boy

The flat end of the bullet goes into the sabot.

I just tried the 200gr 50/40 Shock Waves myself I thought the fit was awful, but they shot 7/8 of an inch with 150gr of APP and that means it must be a lot better than it looks. If they do agood job of opening up on deerwith out blowing up Iwill be happy with them.

The same with me lemoyne.. I am not impressed with the fit of the fit of the bullet to sabot, but I sure am impressed with their accuracy. As in another post, if anyone has experience with them VS whitetail, I'd sure like to know about them. I personally think they will flatten one.

make sure you're not trying to shove it in the wrong end... They fit bad but they do work fine. What kind of rifle are you going to shoot them out of?

A.D.D. BOY

I am a little bit reluctant to get involved here because you requested help from Cayugad.

I am going to say I have made these conclusions from your post but I have no way of confirming my beliefs... I believe you are pretty much a rookie at shooting a ML - I was to several years ago and I am still trying to learn more all the time. My next question would be do you have any centerfire experiance?

Here is what I would suggest from the information that you provided in your opening request and assuming that you are a beginner.

You do not say what powder you have but at this point I would say if it is loose powder put it aside for now and get some pellets, I hate pellets but they are a good way to get started- I would recommend some t7 pellets. You haven't mentioned what gun you are using, but if it is capable of shooting 100 grains and you have the gun cleaned abd ready for shootingdrop 2 pellets down the barrel and load the PowerBelts that you pruchased for now. Leave the sabots and bullets out of theequation for now.

The goal here is to get you shooting - shooting at an approved site and shooting safely. When you start shooting you will learn a whole lot in a hurry.

Good luck and I really hope some of this information is informative and helpful.

RE: I need some answers please CAYUGAD.

Iv never shot a ml before but i have shot every other gun under the sun, i mean from ak's to the smith and wessen .500, ar's i mean everything. I have a cva optima, im using cci primers, and i bouth pyrodex pellets, and my uncle for christmas who just got into ml bought me some more primers and powder, i think he got me triple 7. Iv had the gun for like 2 years and finally just got all the stuff to shoot it, i hate the ramrod on it, one part with the loading jag screws out and the jag is connected to a little metal pole and u keep unscrewin then it falls forward like 3 inches and then there is a secondary set of threads to hold it like that, and i cant take that jag off and put another loading tip on, but on the other side there is a thread whole were i can put like cleaning pathces and brushes and a differnt loading tip, i got it cleaned put some of cva anti seaze stuff that comes in a stick like a glue stick on the breech plug, i have a range well actually 2 ranges about 10 minutes away from my house, one is indoor and the other is outdoor. I want to get a scope for it but i think for now until i get some more money im just gona shoot with sights.

I am a little bit reluctant to get involved here because you requested help from Cayugad.

IM asking for anyones help, i put cayugads name on the post so he would see it and not overloook it because i know he knows alot and so do most of you no offense so please dont take it the wrong way.

Sounds good to me... If I could encourage you, I think the next purchase you might want to get is a "Range Rod." A range rod is a longer than normal ram rod that you can use while shooting targets. The rod will serve you a lot better than the gun rod, actually it sound like there might be a better (after market) gun out there also.

I would still encourage to start as basic as you can shooting 2 pellets and your powerbelts. Shoot a few of these until you are comfortable loading and shooting. I do not need to this any longer but for you starting out I would say shoot four or five rounds damp swabbing between rounds and after the 5th round or so loosen and re-snug you breech plug - might want to do this every 5/6 rounds until you know you machine. This first go around I don't even care if you hit the target, just get the shooting in.

The next real important step will be getting home and cleaning the gun.You have probably read several post on how to that step... Clean her up and go again.

I would also suggest that you buy a box of hornady 45 cal 250 grain XTP bullets and a package of TC Mag Express, Harvester or MMP HPH-24 sabots. Use this combination of sabots for awhile - site your gun in with these - get comfortable loading and shooting this combination and you are off to the races...

The cci primers should work just fine with the Pryro pellets... and for sure with loose powder...

RE: I need some answers please CAYUGAD.

Also, do not forget to put anti seize on your breech plug, only finger tighten the plug in place and then back it off about 1/4 turn, the proper loading jag on the end of the ramrod and short start will not only protect the projectile when loading, but make loading a little easier.

Also Sabot loader is right, since your first starting out, keep it simple fora while. If using loose powder, then stay at 100 grains of it. Triple Se7en I like to stay at 90 grains with my CVA. Be sure and swab between shots, and most of all take your time and do not get in a hurry. Keep your concentration on the loading of the rifle and not anything else. Make a witness mark on your ramrod and be sure all of the loads reach that witness mark. You are going to do fine, and you will see what a blast muzzleloaders are...

Keep us posted on your first range trip and how the rifle shot for you....

I dont know why but it wasnt lettin me post but here is the 200 grain shockwaves in the sabot,

RE: I need some answers please CAYUGAD.

This is the ramrod with the extended jag,i dont like it because the jag dosnt like go in its not hollowed out its just like a little dimple in the metal and im afraid it will mess up the round when i shove it in like the ballistics.

RE: I need some answers please CAYUGAD.

This is the ones I use on the shockwaves. The reason I like them is, not only will they load the shockwave with out damage to the tip but you can also swab the barrel with it, as it will hold a patch. Also because it is so small, when hunting, you can leave it right on the end of the ramrod and shoot over it.

Your picture of the 200 grain Shockwave in the sabot is correct. It does flare the petals some, but they will load well in most rifles and their accuacy is exceptional... I think they will make an excellent deer load. Now if I can just get a deer during season to come in, I can test that theory....

ADD Boy, I use the T/C Shockwave 200 and they work great. The picture you posted is what mine look like when I put them in the barrel. I also use the same jag as cayugad and I put another one on my bullet starter. They will not mess up the aero-tip on the bullet.

I would agree with keeping it simple at first. Soon you will be trying all sorts of load combinations to see what shoots best.

Where do you live? I'm sure someone on the forum would help you out at the range.

A.D.D. BOY

Might want to take a look at the new TC jags. They have been redesigned to allow loading of a variety of different type of bullets. They are also quite inexspensive $4.00 or something like that.

These are pictures of the new extended jag, they do offer a shorter one. If you look at the cup you can see that it has been drilled out to accept the shockwave or even the tight nosed barnes bullet - really works swell + you have a patch jag also - one jag two jobs

Underclocked

No it doesn't - but the range rod I use does. And when I use this on the gun ram rod I use it in goes in a wooden gadget I made and the rod turns inside that.

The loading tip i has is like that. I want to get a replacement rod with a tip like that and on the other side a screw in side for like a palm saver or t-handle, thanks for the advice,.

A.D.D.
I have a CVA Optima Pro and tried the TC sabots first. I could barley get them down the barrel! They shot ok but would not be fun for hunting situations.
I switched to powerbelts and they load and shoot great!

This is at 100 yards, the 2 on the right were before I readjusted the scope.
I get nice groups with the Powerbelts
I am shooting 100 grains of loose Pyrodex select
245 grain hollow point Powerbelts
