Alright i have decided i want to get a traditions hawkens rifle flintlock, but i was looking at it in www.dixiegunworks.com and it said reccomended amount of ffg powder for a ball load is 60 grains and 70 grains for a cylindrical load. Is this all the powder can handle because that sounds a little week, it didnt say it was the maximum but it said reccomended amount?
If you want an excellent hooked breech rifle that is accurate and fun to shoot, although it has a single trigger, check out the Lyman Trade Rifle at D&R Sports... http://www.dnrsports.net/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=DSC&Cat egory_Code=muzzleloaders I bought one in .54 caliber and it is an excellent shooter and a great caliber (mine is a flintlock). The single trigger is not a problem as it is crisp and little creep. I shoot 90 grains of Goex 2f and a .530 patched roundball out of it, and this rifle was accurate right out of the box. And they are under $300.00 . I think if your budget is limited, this is a great new rifle.

Another thing to keep in mind is on many of the gun auction sites, you can pick up a T/C Hawkins or Renegade in excellent condition for around $200.00. I've bought three of them off the auction sites and all of them have been in excellent shape. I really like the old Renegades in .54 caliber with the double triggers. They are an excellent rifle to shoot.

Thanks cayugad for all your help with my troublesome questions, i think i might buy one of the lyman trade rifles from that site seeing that u have used one and had good results from it. Now i just need to decide what caliber for deer, 50 or 54 lol.

If you want to have some longer range, get a .54 caliber. The ball weighs 33% more then the .50 caliber (177 - 224), they have more knock down at longer range, they have a wider diameter, and are just a real personal favorite. Also the .54 is good for elk, bear, deer, just about anything you want to shoot. Since the Trade rifle has a 1-48 twist they shoot roundball, conicals, and I have even shot some powerbelts out of mine. Although roundballs are its speciality. Glad I could be of help.. :D

I bought the Traditons PA pellet flintlock in 50 cal. with the camo composite stock and nickel barrel. It has an easily removeable barrel with removeable breech plug and will shoot 150 gr. of powder. Not as traditional looking as the gun you are talking about but cleans very easily. I shoot 85 gr. of 777 with a 295 gr. powerbelt or 270 gr. Buffalo ball-et. Always prime with genuine black powder in any flintlock. I use Goex ffffg to prime it. You can get the gun with a blued barrel and wood stock if that is what you want also.
See them here:

Buy them here:

I paid $230. Fairly good deal IMO.
