Default Sighting-In For 200 Yards

Well I'm FOR SURE going to the range Saturday if it's not storming. I am using 2 Pyrodex Pellets and a 250-grain TC Shockwave Sabot. I hope to be able to touchdown at 200 yards if ever the situation presented itself. Should I zero at 150 yards, set a few inches high at 100 or is it even possible with this setup?

Don't know for sure, but I would say you might want to add more than 100gr of pellets. I might would try anywhere from 120-150gr. of pellets to make it to 200 yards. I would imagine that the velocity would be minimal at 200 yards and the drop would great using only 100 grains.

Well the reason I'm inquiring is because on the video that came with my Omega, it claimed that if you sighted 3" high at 100, you'd be 6" low at 200. I don't know if that's true or even if it might be better.

try your 100 grain load and shockwaves at 200 yards and see what you get. The results will be interesting and be sure and post them.

That sounds like the trajectory for a bulletapproaching 2,000 fps at sea level. Try 130 grains of Pyrodex pellets (two fifties and a thirty). This load shoots real well in my gun - and delivers at 200 yards.

This is the same load that I shoot in my Omega, Encore and Savage. I havetaken deer at 200+ yds with it.
I shootdead on at 100 yds. and at 200yds it shoots 9" below center. when I shoot at a deer at 200yds. I put thehorizontolcross hair on the back of the deer and the bullet drops in the center of itsbody. It has worked every time I have tryed it.

OLDSNOW, assumming you shot, or at least have shot at some point, 100-grain loads before the 130, did you find the increased recoil with the 130 to be significant enough to be a consideration? I know I sound more concerned about recoil than I really am and when I concentrate on the shot, it's not a problem. However, when I get complacent or excited, like if I was actually shooting at a deer, I tend to forget things like being as far back from the scope as I can be and I took one to the noggin last time at the range.

I would say that the recoil is not that mutch more with 130 grs. The recoil would be a lot less with a 250gr. or even a 200gr. bullet, then it is with a 300gr bullet.

According to a ballistics calculator with a 250 grn shockwave and two 50 grn pellets you would be around 1800 fps and 14.7 inches low at 200yards if you sighted in for 100 yards.

You would have a maximum point blank range of 168 yards if sighted in at 144 yards.

So lets say you sight in at 150 instead of 100. This would put you 3.4 inches high at 80-90 yards and 8 inches low at 200.

At 200 yards you would have around 830 ft/lbs of KE. According to the site I used this is sufficient for a 170 lb or smaller animal. Of course with proper shot placement I am sure it would be enough.

I was going to figure it up for higher powder charges but pyrodex does not list values above 100 grns. If I had to guess I would say around 2100 fps for 150 grns.

That would put you at 2.3 inches high at 90 yards and 5.6 inches low at 200 yards with a 150 yard zero. You would have 1160 ft/lbs of energy though.

Honestly I would concern myself more with how the gun groups at 200 yards, not the trajectory or energy. I would look for a load that grouped well at that distance and then compensate for trajectory afterwards. You can always hold over for longer distances, but if it doesn't group worth a darn at those ranges you are pretty much screwed and hoping you get lucky and put the bullet in the right spot. Loose powder might work better.

I would also say at those ranges knowing your correct range would be pretty important. A range finder would come in handy. If you missjudge 200 yards for 230 yards you will be 11 inches low it will most likely be a miss or wounded deer. And that is with the 150 grn charge and a 150 yard sight in.
