tc omega
Im looking at getting either a tc omega or a traditions pursuit pro? what are the pros and cons of each?
|
RE: tc omega
Both are great rifles. Both will get the job done. Although do some price checking. The T/C Omega in many places has come down in price to make it very afforable. Of course the Pursuit will be less money in almost all cases still.
The Omega is a Thompson Center. It has American Steel, and American craftsmanship. They have excellent fit and finish. They also have outstanding customer support. The Tradition's Pursuit is a Spanish BPI barrel, but they too are well made, have a great customer support and will get the job done. I guess I would look at it this way, if this was the only black powder rifle I would ever buy or one that I would really need to depend on and pass down to future generations, then I guess I would be inclined to spend the extra money for the Omega. |
RE: tc omega
Everything Cayugad mentioned... plus better out of-the-box accuracy (most cases) and much better lifetime waranty with the Omega. It's the most-preferred inline ML on almost every board I visit. One poster here recently has serious issues with his Encore... but those are very few & very far between with T/C.

rochelle,
I echo Cayugad and Triple Se7en 110% Buy the Omega....you'll never be sorry you did! |
RE: tc omega
Rochelle -
I was in Dick's Sporting Goods yesterday and they had a T/C Omega Stainless barrel thumbhole camo for $ 399.00. That's the cheapest I have seen that gun. |
RE: tc omega
bbbagman,
I boughtan Omega.50ca.S.S. Camp Thumbhole from Dicks Sporting Goods last week. The 1st time to the range I had it printing < 1", 5 shot groups @ 100yds. Using 110grs. of Triple 7 FFg and the 289gr. Rem Solid Copper bullet. Do you thiink if I showedthe target to rochelleit would be enough to convincehim to buy an Omega vs.Pursuit? I've never posted a picture before, but I'll see what I can do. I can shoot better than I can get around on a computer! |
RE: tc omega
rochelle,
I'm learning as I go.....hopefully this will upload the picture of my 2nd, 5 shot group with my Omega @ 100yds. It scares me that this isn't going to work....when I preview the picture I uploaded isn't showing?? I might end up needing some help. ![]() |
RE: tc omega
Very impressive Encoreman. I just bought the Omega also. I bought the stainless non-thumbhole laminated. I am very happy with mine. Mine also grouped very well out of the box with 250 shockwaves in front of 100 grains of Pyrodex pellets. It was 95 degrees outsidso as long as it was close enough to hunt I was ready to call it a day.
Encoreman- What primers did you use? There hasbeen alot of talk about the crud ringcaused with triple 7. Did you have any problems? |
RE: tc omega
bbbagman,
I have 2 Omega's.... the one Idescribed in previous threadand the other is a .45cal. S.S. laminated like yours. They are both shooters! I use Winchester primers and "yes" I get a crud ring using 777. It's not bad as long as you use short strokes towards the bottom w/damp patch. I clean between each shot. I don't know why, but I haven't had much luck using the the shockwaves or SST's.....must be me?? When I do shoot them, I have better luck with the 300gr.bullets. Have you tried the 777 pellets out of your Omega? |
RE: tc omega
Considering the "crud ring", do the benefits of the 777 outweight the Pyrodex pellets enough that I should shoot them right from the get-go? I'm getting my Omega tomorrow and am totally open to any help.

RE: tc omega
Illini Sportsman,
1st....Congratulations!....I'm sure you'll be happy with your new Omega. You get a certain amount of crud ring using pellets or 777. You get a little more velocity out of 777 and it cleans up easier w/water but cost more. I'd purchase both and see what your particularrifle likes best. My .45 Omega likes the pellets the best so far. I haven't had my .50 Omega long enough to say one way or another. It does shoot loose 777 very well, but who knows what it'll do with Pyrodex pellets or 777 pellets. You just gotta get out there and see what your gun likes to digest. I'm always trying to find a better load and you can't go by what works in your buddies gun. |
RE: tc omega
No Encoreman, I have only used the Pyrodex pellets. I have had the gun for less than a week and as soon as muzzleloader season is over I m going to try different loads. I must admit that I am very hesitant to try the 777.

RE: tc omega
Thanks very much encoreman. My uncle who hasn't hunted a day in his life actually won the thing on some kind of golf tournament drawing and is giving me first dibs on it! I think a wash and wax of his car is in order. Though 777 pellets may not be the absolute BEST charge for my Omega, they will undoubtedly work efficiently, right? I want the easiest-to-use-and-operate setup I can find to kill a whitetail come firearm season this fall. I like the range and accuracy advantage over a slug-gun and that's really the only reason I'm going with the muzzleloader this year, but it doesn't need to be a tournament-grade paper-puncher, ya know? Any experience with Remington Kleanshot Primers? I know I want a sabot, but the Hornady Speed Sabots sound like the cat's meow for simplicity or is the Shockwave the place to start for sabots on this particular weapon? How hard is it to load 777 pellets without something like the Hornady Speed Sabots? I'm a complete newb to muzzleloading, bear in mind.

RE: tc omega
Illini Sportsman,
I have never used the Remington Kleanshot primers. I came close to buying some the other day, but didn't. I eventually will when I get closer to really needing primers.I'll experiment with them then. I answered your next question on another post, but I'll say it again. I have little use for the lock & load speed sabots. I do not see any advantages in usingthem and feel it's a trap for persons like yourself that are just getting into bp. Don't get me wrong.....I'm not saying that they don't work, I just don't think that they're worth the extra $$ If you really want something that's easy to shoot and accuratetry the Powerbelt bullets and some American Pioneer Powder or sticks. In .50 cal. I'd start with the348gr Powerbelt (aero tip or hp) and 100grs. ofA.P.P. sticks. I see you live in Illinois as I do, but you're in the Southern part and I'm as far North in Ill as you can get without being a cheese head. If you lived closer, I'd let you shoot some of my inventory to get your feet wet. Keep us posted on your progress...we're all here to help out, the best we can. |
RE: tc omega
Thank you very much all of you on all of my posts. I know it can be annoying to help out someone who has never touched anything related to muzzleloading, just as it can be frustrating for me to help people out on other things I consider myself a seasoned veteran on.
