Default APP Powder Problem

Over the weekend I went out in my backyard to figure out my deerload for the year. I was going to try 295 grain vs 245 grain powerbelts using 777 pellets vs APP Pellets. I started using the 777 & found the 245 grain grouped better at 100 yards then the 295 grain using 100 grain pellet loads. I wentthrough the standard breakdown cleaning & began using the APP pellets.

Fist two shots were right with the 777. I then cleaned the gun and let it cool. I then loaded the APP again and had a miss fire. I obviously waited, removed the load, cleaned etc... I reloaded the APP aimed and when the gun went off I had a half kick and a smoking wad of powder and bullet went about 50 yards down range. I figured there had to be user error here, so I cleaned the gun, loaded with 777 to compare and bullseye! Swabbed the barrel loaded with APP & misfire! [:@]
I spent the rest of the day using 777 with no problems. I will stick with 777, 2 out 5 shots actually going off does not give me a lot of confidence in woods.

On a side note, when the first two shots with APP did go off and I cleaned the gun, I did not notice any difference in the cleanliness compared to the 777 as claimed. In fact cleaning the APP off the breech plug was more difficult then 777.

Default RE: APP Powder Problem

I have read other reports of this kind of problem using American Pioneer Powder. People get jugs of bad powder. First thing I would do is contact the company and advise them of this. It would be interesting to hear their responce, and it better not be, well just take it back to the store and get your money back or new powder, because I would tell them where they could put my next batch of powder. I would want to know why their powder went bad. Especially if this was a new jug the pellets came in. You're right, it does not give someone a lot of confidence. If I'd been waiting all day for that shot at a buck and then have a misfire because of the powder.. well needless to say I would black list that stuff real fast.

Triple Se7en is not a dirty powder. That never has been a complaint with the powder. The big complaint with Triple Se7en is some rifles form a hard crud ring when they shoot it. If you swab properly this is not a problem which obviously you do. Also for consistant shot after shot and power, Triple Se7en is hard to match. I think you made a wise move when you decided to stick to the Triple Se7en.

Some people have excellent luck shoot APP. I have personally never shot it as it is now called APP. I shot a lot of it when it was called Clean Shot and in loose form was one of the best powders I ever shot.I liked it so much, one side of me wants to buy more and then the other side reads posts like this and says.. stay away from it.

Glad to hear your rifle tuned in so well. My CVA really does a great job with the 245 grain Aero Tips...
