You'll want a heavier bullet like those Triple Se7en recommended. I prefer the 350 or 400gr PR QT bullets over the Dead Centers because my rifle shoots them a little more consistently. If you think your possible shots will be less than 100yd efforts, you might alsoconsider the 460gr No Excuses conical bullets - they pack quite a punch and have proven accurate out of my Knight.

thanks for your replys. i was leaning towards 300gr sst but it sounds like i should go heavy. and yes more than likely my shots will be less than 100 yards.

I would be sure not to give up rifle accuracy for bullet design. The big thing here is going to be to place that shot in the right place. I personally would think the 300 grain SST would do just fine out of the Encore with a good powder charge behind it. I will state I've never hunted moose with a black powder rifle, but have seen the expansion of the 250 and 300 grain Shockwaves (SST's) and was more then impressed with their ability to expand while keep their mass.

Moose have a thick hide and solid bone structure. You will want something that will penetrate well and expand should it hit any bone. I think the SST as well as any of the others named, would be a good choice.

When I recommended two leaded bullets above, I took a guess you would be hunting in closer quarters. One of the reasons hardly any copper-clads come in monster grain sizes is because of the reduction of expansion as the copper bullet size increases.... especially withmost-popular75-90 grain powder choices with a bullet that big.

I've always preferred lead over copper in muzzleloaders... only because they're more trustworthy for expansion inside 100 yards. What's trustworthy for me - may not be for you. I reach for the coppers whenever I do open field or ridge hunting with magnum loads of powder... that's the only times.

i was looking to push the sst with 130-150 grains of powder, what ever i get the best groups with. i would rather have shot placement than power.

Jim Shockey likes 300 gr Nosler Partions over 100 gr of powder for everything from deer to polar bear.

Me I'm going to use 340 gr DC's over 100gr T7. This groups well in my Omega (3 inch groups at a 100) and over 2x expansion. Out to a hundred it will do the job just fine.

A friend of mine has taken several moose with a 300 grain Barnes Expander MZ - ahead of three 50 grain Pyrodex Pellets. This load kicks a might, but shoots about 2" at 100 yards (I saw this part personally) anddropped Bullwinkle with authority according to witnesses. After using the 300 Shockwave on a big bull elk this fall, I would thinkit would also be suitable - but I would be more confident of the Barnes to hold together if you hit big bone. Good Luck. Roscoe
