RE: moose load
340 gr. Precision Dead Center sold at
http://www.prbullet.com 375 gr. Buffalo SSB (special sabot bullet)...at http://www.cabelas.com ================================== Off-Topic to Hunting.net administrators: I see we can no longer name our hyperlinks here at hunting.net. If I were to give the "correct" hyperlink to the SSB bullet at Cabelas, the hyperlink would extend a mile. We want "naming the hyperlink" back please. It shortensthe linktremendously. |
RE: moose load
You'll want a heavier bullet like those Triple Se7en recommended. I prefer the 350 or 400gr PR QT bullets over the Dead Centers because my rifle shoots them a little more consistently. If you think your possible shots will be less than 100yd efforts, you might alsoconsider the 460gr No Excuses conical bullets - they pack quite a punch and have proven accurate out of my Knight.

RE: moose load
thanks for your replys. i was leaning towards 300gr sst but it sounds like i should go heavy. and yes more than likely my shots will be less than 100 yards.

RE: moose load
I would be sure not to give up rifle accuracy for bullet design. The big thing here is going to be to place that shot in the right place. I personally would think the 300 grain SST would do just fine out of the Encore with a good powder charge behind it. I will state I've never hunted moose with a black powder rifle, but have seen the expansion of the 250 and 300 grain Shockwaves (SST's) and was more then impressed with their ability to expand while keep their mass.
Moose have a thick hide and solid bone structure. You will want something that will penetrate well and expand should it hit any bone. I think the SST as well as any of the others named, would be a good choice. |
RE: moose load
When I recommended two leaded bullets above, I took a guess you would be hunting in closer quarters. One of the reasons hardly any copper-clads come in monster grain sizes is because of the reduction of expansion as the copper bullet size increases.... especially withmost-popular75-90 grain powder choices with a bullet that big.
I've always preferred lead over copper in muzzleloaders... only because they're more trustworthy for expansion inside 100 yards. What's trustworthy for me - may not be for you. I reach for the coppers whenever I do open field or ridge hunting with magnum loads of powder... that's the only times. |
RE: moose load
i was looking to push the sst with 130-150 grains of powder, what ever i get the best groups with. i would rather have shot placement than power.

RE: moose load
Jim Shockey likes 300 gr Nosler Partions over 100 gr of powder for everything from deer to polar bear.
Me I'm going to use 340 gr DC's over 100gr T7. This groups well in my Omega (3 inch groups at a 100) and over 2x expansion. Out to a hundred it will do the job just fine. |

The same goes for Jim Shockey's personalized-label American Pioneer Powder. If/when APP quits sending Jim money for his endorsement, Jim will jump right back on the 777-train. |
RE: moose load
A friend of mine has taken several moose with a 300 grain Barnes Expander MZ - ahead of three 50 grain Pyrodex Pellets. This load kicks a might, but shoots about 2" at 100 yards (I saw this part personally) anddropped Bullwinkle with authority according to witnesses. After using the 300 Shockwave on a big bull elk this fall, I would thinkit would also be suitable - but I would be more confident of the Barnes to hold together if you hit big bone. Good Luck. Roscoe

RE: moose load
TripleSe7en, I hear ya. If only I'd get paid to shoot a specific bullet/powder combination.
I think T7 is one of the finer developments to the muzzle loading hunter. Bullets aside, the no fuss, no muss of T7 is simply head and shoulders above any other powder.IMO Crud ring....just clean the dang thing. With one or two shot's at an animal it isn't an issue anyway. The 340 gr DC's I tested (using Chapman's test scenario) performed quite well and I'm confident that they will dust old moosey just fine and it will be my load this fall for moose. |
RE: moose load
PR Bullet 360 grain Extreme Elite w/ 100 grain pyrodex. Last Novembers' moose was down before the smoke cleared.

RE: moose load
I would think 300 sst or any other mentioned would get her done. I have taken only 1moose with 460 grain cronical behind 120 Pyrodex RS in a Gonic a number of years back.I called the bull into approx 35 yards before placing it squarely in his lungs and the average sized canadian bull made slow/short trek before succumbing to his wounds. I personally find moose pretty weak when it comes to stopping power requiredbut like mentioned attention/respect must be paid to their extremely tough hides and large bone/muscle mass. I have seen guys take these poor angled shoots with precision only to require a finisher or clear lung shot to get it done..as such personally would pick construction over extreme or absolute accuracy for a moose hunt on this premise alone. Of course within reason and if the situation dictated I could loose the accuracy and still make a clean/accurate shot for the hunt I was partaking in.Of course the preference is to have both areas covered,I can't speak from experience on the 300 gr sst for large animals but the 250gr works well on our large bodied deer in saskatchewan.
Best of luck |
