Default Idaho Elk

Have any of you ever hunted elk in the Middlefork zone in Idaho? We are thinking of hunting early (Sept) and flying in to the Cold Meadows airstrip and then spiking out from there. Love to here from someone who has hunted this area. Thanks

I personally would reconsider hunting in that area! I live in the northern part of ID but have friends the live in the salmon area and they claim the wolves have really hurt the elk populations! The ID fish and game may tell you otherwise but they are known for saying anything to sell a few more non resident tags. Look into the Lemhi river area or Selway. The St. Joe river country still has a lot of elk but there are a lot of hunters also.
Hope this helps, John

I'm in the Panhandle - a local builder friend of mine I hunt deer with hunts down that during muzzle loading season. He's gotten 3 elk in 3 years there. I know two other people who hunt that area - one with a bow and one during rifle season. The bow hunter has harvested every year; the rifle hunter didn't last year but did the year before that.
It's rough country - if you're muzzle hunting bring snow shoes.
I slog around up here in the Panhandle - my homeschooling activities don't allow me the time to hunt down that way.

idlogger-- where else can we fly into in GMU 20A, 26, 27? That is where we can hunt both deer and elk. We really want elk and deer would be nice.

I'm not that familiar with those units. I know a guy in Salmon that used to giude in the area you want go! They hunted out of cold meadows. I can find you his # if you like and maybe he can steer you in the right direction?
If you are interested let me know your e mail address and I'll send it to you.

Rebel Hog, I would venture to say that the store is somewhere in the high country.
