It must be a case of "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then as a last ditch attempt, try baffling them with bull$h!t." Does anyone really have a clear idea what this last post really says?

RE: 270’s, 270’s, 270’s…. I Think I’m Gonna Puke!

I think a 270 with kill elk and have seen it done many times, is it the best choice NO. Any bullet through the lungs/heart of ANY elk with a 270 will kill it humanely. I have seen many elk shot bulls, cows, and calves with a variety of calibers and it all comes down to shot placement. I love the sediment that a 270 is okay for cows but not bulls. That is bull. The toughest elk I ever saw was shot with a 375 HH mag through both shoulders and shredded the front of it lungs and it hopped up a steep rocky slope for 200 yards before expiring. I wonder how far it would have gone if that was a 270 ;) It was an old dry cow. Sure bulls are a little bigger and a little stronger but not twice as big and twice as strong as often placed on these forums. ANY elk has a strong will to survive especially if that first shot is marginal. It comes down to the hunter, a good elk hunter can kill elk with just about anything, a bad hunter can have a heat seeking missle and come home empty. 2point

REFERENCE.... 270's, 270's, 270's.... I Think I'm Gonna Puke!

Since the "270 For Elk?" question is never ending and the answers essentially all the same every time it comes around, I started this thread to "round up all the cliches" that I could in one place and give the "30-06 and up" gang a way to answer the never ending "270 Question For Elk" without having to work overtime or having to re-invent the wheel. Feel free to cut and paste any of my posts into the most recent "270 for elk?" thread so long as you feel what I wrote is appropriate for an answer.

I have went back and edited my posts with a Bold Title to match this list so it will be easy for you to spot it. "Top" means near the top of the page, "Mid" and "Low" work similarly.

Page 1 (Top) EKM - Why the disconnect? Why not use bigger tools for bigger jobs?
Page 5 (Low) EKM - Magnum Shot Placement, Any: Angle, Bone, Time!
Page 6 (Mid) SpyroAndes - Its About Being Unhindered By Your Weapon!
Page 7 (Mid) Rather Be Hunting - Dead Is Dead.... Oh, Really?
Page 7 (Low) BareBackJack - Jack O'Connor's 270 Was The Ultimate SHEEP Rifle!
Page 8 (Top) EKM - Varmit Rifles, Deer Rifles, Cross-over Rifles, Elk Rifles, Elk Hammers!

Page 9 (Low) ELKINMTCWB - 270's, You shoot'em, Someone Else Tags'em, Your Decision!

This same index is posted at the top of the first post of the first page. ================================================== =====

Just Remember the Keywords: "Reference" or "Puke" and you'll be able to pull it up with the search function!
I'm hoping it will help provide the "30-06 & Up For Elk" faithful an easier, more efficient, and less time consuming way of answering, "The Never Ending Question!"

Good Luck

RE: 270’s, 270’s, 270’s…. I Think I’m Gonna Puke!

As to not add to any more ( making people PUKE.) I will bow out of this debate for good. I leave you with this final thought which has always been my view. A skilled hunter will have no problem with taking any size elk with the 270, 7mm-08 and 7x57 rifles. Any other kind of hunter may not be able to handle them. Nobody can deny me what I have seen with my own eyes and have done myself. Anyone who is bothered my people useing the 270 class rifles can work to change the law and show the Game and fish people that they are wrong in allowing marginal ( for some people) rifles.

Others can keep up this debate but I have presented my view and I quess I can quit fueling the fire . Nobody is going to change their view without good cause so I wish everybody a good upcomming season. I think I will go out and buy a 270 before this falls season. I know it will work for me. Has before and will again.

BTW, again, this same index is posted at the top of the first post of the first page.
I'll be sure to add any "new ones" as they come along and then update the index accordingly. ;):D:D:D

I must say That I do agree with elkm in the fact that if you have the opportunity to use a bigger gun, please do.

Then I also agree with Jamesb in the respect that if all you have is a 270, then use it as it will do the job to.

Now with that said, do any of you have a real good shot with your 270's? Maybe you can knock the chip of elkcampmaster shoulder. Then maybe he will realize that just because he goes camping with a bunch of guys that use big guns, doesn't make him the leading athority on Elk hunting.
Just as he has his right to his opinion on this matter, there are thousands upon thousands of hunters accross your land and our land that have the right to thier opinion with out being chastized buy a fellow hunter that seems to be so highly motivated emotionaly that he appears to have lost sight of the fact that we live in FREE and democratic society that is governed by laws, rules, and regulations set forth by our governing bodies.
Some where in these laws , rules, and regulations, it says that it is your right as a licensed hunter to choose between a predetermined range of rifle calibers to harvest big game animals. Now as an outfitter I have the last say as to what rifle caliber you will bring to my camp, cause I am the big cheese and what I say goes..Outside my camp...I, You, He, do not have the right to tell you what caliber to use, Do what you feel is right, live with your dessision.

DOn't let the ramblings of one man deter you from asking advice on a weapon you are uncertain about.

Hmmm, encouraging gun play between hunters (even figuratively).... careful, they might tighten up your Canadian gun laws another notch.

".... just because he goes camping with a bunch of guys that use big guns, doesn't make him the leading athority on Elk hunting. ...."
I'm thinking you're right about me not being the leading authority on Elk hunting.... I would have to bestow that honor on our steadfast bowhunters, and even they will talk to you about "beefing up" your equipment for elk. However, I do mention what we do in our camp [we used to have "pop guns" in camp] because it is not just a single opinion like most of the posts here, it reflects the change in opinion over time of 6 to 10 hunters based upon experience.
[Side Note: in our camp there is no REVENUE lost for those who don't come as there would be in your case. We have no vested interest in allowing folks in camp inspite of their marginal setups. ;)]

Nope, these red-blooded American boys (and girls) sure don't need anyone to remind them of their rights and, as you might expect, will decide for themselves on the merits of what they observe --- both pro-270 and otherwise. You know, now that I mention it....
This post came from within this thread....

".... The fact be known that after posting some questions about the .270 I have come to the realization that it will be better to purchase a .30 caliber like the WSM and keep the .270 for deer season...."
Give'em both sides of the story and let them decide.... that's what they're gonna do anyway.
Really though, this thread is intended for my fellow hunters who believe in the "30-06 and up for elk."
