What's a good .270 weight / brand for elk?

RE: What's a good .270 weight / brand for elk?
I have used a .270 to harvest both Elk and Moose in my home province, I used either the 150gr Nosler Part or 140 Gr failsafe, never lost an animal with either but I agree pick your shots. Personally my limit was 250 yards with positive angle shots where the vitals could be reached without heavy obstruction (meaning broadside or slight quarters). I currently elk/moose hunt with a .270 shooter, he owns bigger but is most confident with this gun and I have yet to see him need a second shot or assistance locating his downed animal. BTW he uses 150 Nosler Partition but always go with whichever premium solid constructed bullet shoots best in your rifle (like the others mentioned - only exception would be the Corelokt mentioned, I wouldn't consider it a Premium or suitable elk bullet choice for the .270).

In my family the 270 win using 130gr boat tails by speer have taken over 30 elk. I've taken a few with my newer 300win mag was there any difference in take down on the elk nope. Alot of people today are on the super mag kick saying that you have to have it to kill an elk size animal but I say if you can't kill it with the 270 win then sooner or later you won't kill it with a super mag either. Opinions are just opinions same with mine on the topic. But I will enlighten some on one topic you only kill as well as you shoot. Everyone makes a bad shot now and then but if you practice enough you won't be tracking an animal very far.
I've never tried the 140gr bullets but from what I've seen and heard they should of been out years ago for the 270. good luck

I do not like the 270 for elk and it is'nt my idea of an "elk gun" and is marginal. Haveing said that... I take it you already have one and are comfortable w/ it. If thats the case, just like everyone said, use the heaviest premium bullet that your rifle will shoot accurately and enjoy your hunt. IF you dont already own one and are looking to buy a new rifle for this elk hunt, look at the 30-06/7rem mag and up, they are not really questioned as elk calibers and WILL serve you better as a year in year out elk rifle.

I agree with Howler and Cherokee,
I have been to Rifle CO. 4 times, the last was 1995.
There was four of us, 2 used .270, 1 used .280, 1 used 7mmRM.
I shoot .270 140gr Rem core-lokt UB psp. We hauled back 6 Elk between all 4.
I came back with 2 busted ribs. The 4 wheeler bucked me off. I was 60 then, still feel it.
Liked to have froze my but off.

How's this for ya!! I've shot 13 elk with my .270, in my home state!! All were one shot kills, except one. The longest shot was right at 250 yards, shortest shot 50 yards. Only had one pass through and that was on a cow that was quartered away at 50 yards., the 140 gr. fail safe went through the far shoulder. On all the others the bullets were 150 gr. partitions. Only once did I use the fail safes, they worked, but I have gone to bow hunting them now!

No offense directed but it's funny how you MUST have a certain game animal in your state in order to have experience hunting them. Must be a new law or something.
Yeah in a state where the average bull is 2/3rds the size of a real bull

My father has used a 270 with a 130 gr bullet for over 30years, mostly hunting moose in northern B.C. He`s shot over 2 dozen of them, all with one shot kills too. So, I guess the 270 would be good enough for elk IMHO.
