Default 270 or 280

I'm going to buy a new rifle and I want something with available ammo and these are the best choices I can find. Will be used for whitetails and black bear maybe elk.

Are yoy buying three rifles or just buying one and want to choose betweent, 270, 280, 30-06, 7mm, 300 WSM, and the 300 WinMag? Between the 270 and 280 I would choose the 280 because you mentioned that you will maybe elk hunt. Wtih a 280 you can shoot 140 grains at deer and then shoot a 160 grain for the bigger stuff.

I'm a die hard .280 fan and have used my pet .280 to kill everything from woodchucks to Alaska bull moose...

However, I'm also a handloader...My .280 has never had a factory load fired through it...

If I were NOT a handloader, I'd prefer a .270 over a .280 because of the much larger selection of factory loads that are available for the .270.. Actually, with equal or similar bullet weights, the performance of the two cartridges is so close that I don't that you or the game would ever know the difference in the field...

I would take, and I did the 280 Remington. Having said that, the 270 Win. and the 280 Rem. are as close to one another as any two cartridges we have. The 280 Rem. has a slight advantage over the 270 Win. because heavier bullets are available. Federal has two 160 gr. loads, a Trophy Bonded Bear Claw and a Nosler AccuBond. Remington has a 165 gr. Core-Lokt and if you do hand load you can go with 175 gr. bullets.

Do yourself a favor and don't over look the 30-06. I'm not saying its better then the other two, but its pretty versatile !

Between these 2----I would take the 280. But the 30/06 would be my 1st choice.

I believe annual ammo sales put the .30-06 first, the .30-30 second (although Winchester sells more .308 ammo) and the .270 third. Now 50 million Frenchmen can easily be wrong, but not that many hunters.

The .300 Win. Mag will do a fine job for your choice of game. Good luck.
