Looking for some insight on good places to hunt elk on public ground near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. A couple of friends of mine go out there every couple of years or so and I decided to go in fall of 2006. I figure this gives me time to get alot of info gathered up since I never hunted elk before. They see elk and mulies but never seem to get any bulls. They hunt in Weminuche Wilderness and that part of the San Juan National forest. I know this is a loaded question in that I am asking for some insight on someones honeyhole...lol
These guys never heard of this place (huntingnet) and I figured I might as well try to get a leg up on them before we get out there...lol

What season do they hunt? My first choices for that area to kill a bull would be, in this order: Muzzleloading and 1st rifle. Later seasons are after the rut and the elk have been hunted hard. Snow would be required to bring them down. Can't help you with specific areas, haven't hunted there.
