RE: Bullet weight in 7mm magnum for elk?

As stated, the Core Lokt is usually considered a "soft" bullet. Fortunately there is a wide variety of premium bullets out there that will definately get the job done. Federal loads the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, as well as the Partition which, even though it's old and boring, may be the best bullet ever designed. The Fail Safe from Winchester is also a deadly choice. The 7mm Mags are a great choice for elk, but I don't think it's a question of what weight bullet to use, as bullets from 140-175 will all work. It's more of a question of what type of bullet to use, as elk are big critters and have a reputation of being tough to put down. A quality premium bullet is a smart choice. Good luck!

One of my hunting buddies uses a 7mmRemMag as his "do all" rifle. I have witnessed him taking 5 elk. All one shot kills and all using 160gr Failsafes. Just can't argue with continued success. Since you asked for opinions, I suggest you get a box of Failsafes and see just how accurate they are in your rifle. If they (or TBBC, NPs, or another bonded bullet) shoots well, you might consider using them. Once in a lifetime hunts come around? UHHHH..... Once in a Lifetime!!!! Just my opinion. I also recognize that the good old Core-Lokt has probably killed more elk than all others combined, but if there is a better mouse trap? Have a great hunt!
