anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
I've really been hit hard the past couple of days with the desire to go. Its been 3 years this fall since I was in the Mtns of Colorado in mid-September. I miss it greatly.
I have my Colorado DOW rule/regs and draw permit apps in the mail, and will send in for PP, but a part of me wants to go ahead and try for a muzzleload tag. I got a PP, so I have a shot at drawing I think. I probably won't though, saving the vacation to hunt with my Dad here in Arkansa, but the urge is very strong ..... anyone else ? |
RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
Yep, with one point you could come hunt Colorado with the muzz. Hard to beat the aspens turning, cool, crisp mornings and bugling elk. Take your dad along with you, he'de enjoy himself, even if he wasn't hunting. I know opening morning will find me at 11,000 feet over looking some elk wallow or water hole, waiting for some mountain monarch to to meet his fate. Good luck wherever you go.

RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
Stealthy, you probably would get drawn with one point. Hope so anyway, cause that is what I plan to do and I have one point. Will be on a pack-in trip outside Durango to muzzleload for bulls. Can't beat it. I consider it the ultimate hunt. It is intoxicating and I don't drink! Swaying you yet?
The next fall, I will be hunting early Sept. rifle season for bucks on a high country hunt in Colorado with Deerking. Can't wait! Good hunting! |
RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
Only 177 days until early archery elk opens in Washington state, but who is counting? Nothing beats hunting for elk.

I put in for a M/L tag here in Utah. I don't have many more elk hunts left in me at this point in life, so I've got my fingers crossed.

Hey Weasel, you hunt til you drop. I see a guy out here every year, must be 150 years old. His kids put him out in a chair every morning and pick him up about 10:00. He gets his elk every year. NEVER too old.

RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
Too old for the type of hunting I like to do anyway. Oh, actually, my Dad is in good enough shape, he killed a 250 P&Y class 6x6 the year we went together and just doesn't have a great desire to go back and hunt that hard again.
I am going to put in for my deer, elk and antelope PP again this year and wait until next year to go. I think this fall would be awesome, and who knows, OTC archery ,maybe, but I'll plan to do my Kansas whitetail hunt (if I draw) and a few weekends with Dad and be happy with that. I have a nice 300 class 5x6 on my wall, and a couple of other bulls, so its not like I haven't experienced it. I just think elk hunting is the hardest hunting I have ever done, because of the country they live in, which to top it all of is God's country at its finest. I've heard sheep hunting gets in your blood, I imagine its a lot like elk hunting except harder and more breathtaking. |
RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
What part of Colorado do you normally hunt in? I have mostly hunted near Glenwood Springs but am excited about the Durango area for this year. It has some really gorgeous country. Seeing the country, listening to bugling bulls and seeing golden aspen trees is about 80% of the trip for me. Good luck wherever you hunt this year.

RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
Drawn a Ballot for Fiordland Wapiti. (Elk)
Mount Longsight Block. (Coastal.) Will hunt from a base tent camp. Fly in by helicoptor with a 3.5M inflatable boat on board. Move around by boat, and maybe do a couple of overnight inland trips They are getting rare down there, but still the odd good one sneeking about. Tough hunting conditions, wet, wild, remote, steep, bush clad. 7th time down there for me. Season here is Mid March to End April. Heading out 11th April until 22nd April. Gearing up the chopper boat etc. Here's hoping for good weather and a nice big 6X6 (300+) Also the side attractions of Fishing, hopefully find a couple of lazy big browns (Trout) and catch a few cod and groper in the sea. The crayfish(lobster) and Paua (Abalone.) will just top it all off. I'm getting hungry already. Almost sounds too good to be true. Will post a few pics after the event. SOUTHERN MAN. RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
I often see many folks on here who would love to elk hunt. I would be open to taking anyone elk hunting in exchange for a quality whitetail hunting opportunity. Here where I live, getting a tag is as easy as buying it over the counter, and for all you archers, I believe Idaho offers some of the best archery elk hunting. We have millions of acres of public land and an abundance of elk. Anyone who is series and interested in archery or rifle elk in exchange for a whitetail hunt, send me an email. Would love to chat with ya about the opportunities.

BuckoDuck - You don't say ! Do you shoot locally ? Compound or recurve/longbow ? Lets talk !
staylor - I always hunted the Weminuche - hard hunt, tough area, rugged. What are your plans and I'll tell you what I can. |
RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
staylor, can't help you on the units for the wilderness, but if it is for a "statewide" tag you would have had a 50:50 chance of drawing last year. Go for it.

RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
alright elk talk....using a diaphram call, getting a growl, a chuckle and a young bull bugle? Any recommendations on the how to's. I have the cow mew down....the bugle is coming along but still pretty lacking! Had the hose to the vacuum out the other day...GAG hehe! Well after cleaning it out it sounded decent. Now what in the heck is the difference between a chuckle, growl, and a grunt of a bull? Also is there only 2 calls for cows...a bark and that mew sound? I am learning sloooowly, trying to grasp all this. This man is going elk hunting..YEEEHAAA! got the tag 2 weeks ago...trying to get a packing list together and a fly date...I am thinking just takin the hole dang month! if not the hole month 20 days atleast, figured being I drew I might as well do it right!

RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
I am going to apply here in NV as soon as the apps come out. I will be applying for Muzz. cow elk. The two areas that I plan to apply for were 1 to 1 draw odds last year. I just hope they stay the same this year. It all depends on how many tags are issued and how many people apply for those tags. They have been increasing tags, though for the past couple of years, and this year looks to be pretty good, wo we'll see in June.

RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
I've been chomping at the bit for elk season to start for awhile. I've been seeing two 5 points nearly every day near my house. This morning I got out of bed and looked out the window and there were 7 cows and a spike in our field in front of the house. One of the cows has a white face and chest, it's the strangeest looking elk I've ever seen. I got some pictures but they are a little grainy with the digital camera zoomed in that far. If I can get a better picture of it I will try to figgure out how to post it.

RE: anyone else wanting to elk hunt this fall ??
No elk hunting for me this fall unless I don't draw a Kansas archery whitetail tag. My chances of drawing that tag are 95% or better I would say because I know a landowner whos going to put in for the draw as well.
Ya'll keep posting on elk hunting as September gets closer. Like I said, I truly miss the early mornings in Colorado and the bugles of elk. Best hunting I have ever experienced ... |
