I just got back yesterday from colorado, i took out a nice 6X6 with my .270. Its a model 700 so its very accurate, but it was at 390 yds, shot with a rangefinder. None of the fancy bullets mentioned i might add. Just the Remington 150 gr core-loks. They just shoot great out of my gun. Some of the cheapest bullets around for the .270.
Great job...my point proven again...the good ole .270 Winchester with any cheap bullets will take elk with easy at 300+ yds

Let's see....

Use a cross over caliber....
Use the poorest/cheapest quality bullets available....
Hunt in packs of two or more, effectively party hunting....
Open up on 'em when they are at nigh on a quarter mile away....

Well okay, if you say so

Use a QUALITY PREMIUM bullet, and limit your shots to 300 yards or under. Elk are VERY tough, and please don't skimp on bullets! Iv'e seen too many well hit Elk just get up and run off due to poor bullet performance. I personally prefer the Fail Safe, they are very accurate, and will fully penetrate an Elk at any reasonable distance. All big game animals I have shot with the Fail Safe have been one shot kills. I use a .300 Win Mag, so I feel confident taking shots out to 450 or so yards. The Elk I took last year was 400+ yards away. There was no way for me to get closer, and I had a Dead rest. It went about 75 yards and piled up. Upon insection the bullet had penetrated completely, and did massive damage internally. Could I have gotten the same result from plain jane loads? Maybe, but I doubt it.
