I just inherited a 7mm Mauser. I can find plenty of 140 or 145 grain bullets for it but would like something a little heavier to shoot elk with. Does anyone have an opinion on whether a 145gr bullet will work? Any sugguestions on where to find ammo on-line (160gr. would be nice)??

Try Midway USA. I have bought ammo from them. I have purchased 175 grain loaded ammo for the 7x57 mauser. The 7x57 will take elk, no problem. I reload for mine and use mostly Hornady bullets.

I've seen lots of 7mm-08's kill elk so why not the 7mm mauser, you buy a 175 gr load for it I'm sure it's no bean feild shooter but aought to be plenty for elk out to 200.
I have a 7mm-08 modle seven that I plan on using as a saddle carbine,I'm using 139gr Hornady Light Mags.It should work fine.Remeber the 7mm Mauser was once used to kill a few elephants.
I think bullet weights from 140-to-175 should work.

I hunted with a 7x57 for a time, and i liked it pretty good. I remember i shot one heck of a big bull caribou with it, useing a handloaded 175 grain Speer magtip. It did a great job!!
I also shot a few coyotes with the same gun and load, it was easier on the pelts than a lot of smaller cals..
Personally, i'd stick with 150 grain or heavier for elk with a 7mm-08, or 7x57..

Federal loads a 140gr Nosler Partition for the 7x57Mauser cartridge. That should slam elk with no problems.
Norma loads a 154gr Spire Point cartridge. Fine for elk.
PMC loads the 175gr Spire Point. Between those three, you should find one or more that will shoot well in your rifle.
