RE: What is the best gun for moose and elk

I'm not saying that big lead is a crutch for poor shot placement at all. It doesn't matter how big the bullet is if the bullet doesn't hit a vital organ. If a man can't shoot his gun then, you're right, he shouldn't be out there in the first place.

I am just saying that I personally would rather send a 300 grain, .358 or .375 bullet his way as opposed to a 180 or 200 grain .308 bullet if a "sticky situation" arose.

Hands down the .338 win mag, with 225 or 250 gr bullets.I have shot the 338 alot and I feel the recoil is not as bad as my .300 win or my 300 ultra mag.

I think a 7mm ulta mag would be a pretty good gun.

I think the 300 mag or the 7m.m. mag are the favourite choices for moose .

You would have to think that a person is more likely to go hunting elk and moose than bear. A 375 is a bit much for elk. I would say a person will hunt elk 10-15 time more often than bears. Thats why you buy a gun you can shoot well.

All you really need is a .204 Ruger. Because everyone on earth shoots so well and is so selective with there shots. Just shoot that moose right in the eye with that .204. You won't even ruin any meat. It'll be perfect.

(I just felt the need. I know I am going to be at odds with some people here, but Cherokee and I have been debating a similar topic)

On a serious note. I feel the .300 win mag is one of the best all around cartidges made. It can be loaded down, and up. Can be used for anything from Coyotes to big bears. If I could only have one gun it would be a .300 win mag, luckily we're not limited. Personally I am not a big fan of the short mags, even though I know a lot of people are shooting them.

LOL 338,

What if the Ruger 204 bounced off his eyelid and only gave him a black eye. Haha just kiddin.

When I think of moose and elk together for one gun I do think bigger and meaner guns theres alot of meat on both them critters. Had a buddy take a moose. Two shots from a 416rigby and took em both through the lungs standing up. Moose was dead just didn't know it yet.

Its for the individual to decide but going after moose I would take my elk rifle 300 win.

I have to be honest while I've shot a 270 for almost a decade before i got a 300win. It was my main gun and I wasn't and still wouldn't be afraid to shoot anything from moose on down providing the shooting opportunity was a good one. I have fell in love with the 300 win. and its at the top of my list of one of the best all around north american game rifles. Its a matter of personal choice and expertise with a rifle on ones limitations.
