What is best 30-06 Bullet for Elk?
Going Elk hunting next year, shoot a 30.06, thinking about using Federal Preium 180 grain Nozler partion ammo. What do you folks think, is that a good selection?

Hi Oldguy,
I think you'd find that one of the better loads for the purpose......as long as they shoot acceptably well in your rifle! Good luck! Dave |
RE: What is best 30-06 Bullet for Elk?
I dont see why they wouldnt be,. How well do they group out of your rifle though?
The reason I ask is, I have a Win. mod. 70 and I for the life of me I cant get the Nos. to group under a 1 1/2 group at a hundred yards. But on the other hand the Swift A Frames are grouping about a 3/4 group at a hundred. If they group well in your rifle then I dont think you could buy a better factory round then those. Just a thought Leroy |

OK, thanks everyone for your advice/thoughts/knowledge. I am really looking forward to it!

As has been said, if they group well in your rifle there really is no better choice.

If they don't group well try 180 gr. Barnes X, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Swift A-Frame, Win. Partition Gold, or Win. Fail Safe. Good luck.

First elk hunt I ever went on I used the Fed Premium 180 gr Nosler Partition out of an .06. Got lucky and nailed a bull at about 100 yards. First shot went in just behind the left front shoulder and broke the right front shoulder, knocking him to his knees.
Great bullet for an .06. Some bullets group better than others based on the rifle. Have a great hunt! |

338 - I shoot the same rifle Win Mod 70 30-06 with Remington Factory loads 180 gr. No grouping problem at 100 and 200 (max distance for me).

Nothing wrong with that bullet. I have used 165 and 180 to shoot elk they both worked well.

RE: What is best 30-06 Bullet for Elk?
I'm going on a elk hunt in 05. I'm planning on using my Win. Model 70, in 30/06. I've been developing a load for the hunt using a 180 gr. Nosler Partition. Accuracy has been decent, averaging a tad over 1". Velocity is around 2750 fps.
I have a lot of confidence in the Partition bullet. |

180 gr. Nosler partitions are excellent slugs. We've killed elk, deer, grizzly and black bear, moose, caribou, and mountain goats... all with the same load. They dropped the bear and the moose like a ton of bricks.

Don't overlook the Barnes Triple Shock either, that bullet holds together very well. Four nice little petals. I had a friend shoot a 160 grainer out of his 7 mag at a 1/2 inch steel gong, and when we found the bullet, the thing was 158.5 grains, all the way through. The Nosler will do well also.

RE: What is best 30-06 Bullet for Elk?
My husband used the exact bullet you described to take down a 280 class 6x6 on his 1st ever elk hunting trip this past fall. SO, my "unbiased" ;) opinion would be that it seems to be a decent choice. :D

RE: What is best 30-06 Bullet for Elk?
When I killed my elk in 2000 I was a 30.06 with a 150 gr. boat-tail and it worked fine and dandy.
