Not sure how much help this is. But 1st I would call the local DOW office. The White River NF ---is near Glenwood Springs correct? Then I would call the DOW office there & talk to them. 970-947-2920. Try to get a feel of the area----ask them for the number of the Forest office & local sporting good store to get topo maps. Then do some home work looking over drainages & ridges. You can also go to www.BigGameCD.com for GMU maps. Good luck.

The White River NF is HUGE. Glenwood Springs is just one area of it. Some of the best rated hunting in CO is in the Flat Tops Wilderness area. You have to walk it all or have horses, which you can rent in the area. The NF is on both sides of I-70 there is plenty of areas to hunt that you can also drive into and use 4 wheelers. Check on the Meeker and Rifle areas they are also very popular.

YEAH THE ELK POPULATION IN THE MEEKER AND DOUGLAS AREAS, PARTICULARY AREAS 211 AND 11 HAVE BEEN BOOMING. ALSO THE QUALITY OF ELK SHOULD BE BETTER THIS YEAR THAN 2003 BECAUSE HARVEST REPORTS SAY IT DIDNT MEET THE DOW EXPECTATIONS OF HARVEST DUE TO THE MILD WEATHER.

RE: White River NF Co
My dad and I are planning to hunt white river as well this fall. Are the meeker, rifle, douglas, and yampa areas in the white NF? We plan on walking in and getting off the beaten path. are these good starting points? what about horse rentals, names and phone #'s? I sent for topo's already, any help you give me would be greatly appreciated.
