Default Big Game Cartridges

I purchased a 30-30 marlin with a 3X9 scope for christmas. Can e hunt the big gamers with that cartridge elk, moose, boar, sheep etc. Can I hunt deer wth a remington 223- 3X9 scope, it is deadly accurate? Thank you for you time. Dennis

topcop, The 30-30 is a great deer cartridge, and it can also take elk within 75 yards but moose would have to be real close 50 yards or closer. The .223 is a great deer cartridge.

You can hunt all of these animals with a 30-30 but it would certainly not be one of the better picks for moose or elk.It only has enough power for very close shots to reliably kill elk and moose.

.30-06 is the best universal big game cartridge in my opinion. You can take anything in North America with it and fairly distant ranges.

From Squirrel to Elephant, the Shotgun is your gun.

I would use a .30 caliber or larger for elk...300Win or bigger! The .223 will take deer with good shot placement...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hunt Safe!

By golly Blain I have to agree with you on that one. You really can't go wrong with an 06.

OK...now I'm confused!!! It seems that everyone usually thinks you need a .300 super magnum Remchester firing 1 ounce slugs at 4000 fps to kill a deer! Now I read that a .22 gopher gun is adequate?OK..before everyone gets mad at me,yes,a .223 WILL kill a deer....but I would not put it at the top of my list.If you really must do it,use the 60gr partitions and be VERY selective on shot placement. The 30-30 is still a great deer round but for larger game keep your ranges SHORT!!!(50-75yrds max.)

I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually agree with Blain on something...almost. I certainly wouldn't pick a 30-06 as my first choice for coastal brownies but for anything else in north america it's hard to beat. The 30-30 is a great deer round within it's range limits, about 200 yds. I wouldn't take it after elk or moose but it could be made to work if that's all you had. The .223 is another matter, it's not a deer round no matter what way you slice it. It's illegal in most places so it's a moot point. A few states let you hunt deer with it and you'll find a bunch of guys on this forum getting defensive because they killed &quot;X&quot; number of deer with a .223. What they don't tell you is the number they wounded to collect &quot;X&quot; number. In my opinion if you don't have enough respect for the animal to use something bigger than a .223 for deer then you shouldn't be hunting.
