Hi, I am wondering if anyone has a recommendation for an alaskan caribou Outfitter? Caribou hunting is one of the hunts I've been wanting to do for a while. Looking for more of a medium price range hunt. I'd also like to know about your personal experience with the guide. Thanks!

Have you considered a hunt in Manitoba? I had always wanted to do a caribou hunt also so a couple of years ago I started researching hunts from Alaska to Newfoundland (and everywhere in between!). I contacted at least a dozen different outfitters, talked to other hunters who had hunted various places, etc. When it was all said and done, Manitoba stood out as the best place to go....by far. I narrowed my choices down to two outfitters and ended up booking a hunt with The Lodge at Little Duck. I went up there last September and it was fantastic. I killed two big bulls as did the other hunters in camp. Everyone who hunted there in 2013 killed big bulls...they went 100%. The herd that migrates down from Nunavut numbers over 400,000 and Manitoba only issues 250 resident and 250 non-resident tags. So, the herd is virtually untouched. Not all of the caribou there migrate in....there are many resident caribou as well. I couldn't have asked for a better hunt...super accommodations, great guides, absolutely beautiful country, etc. I filled my second tag on the 3rd day and then fished after that (and took pictures)...fishing is phenomenal...Lake Trout, Northern Pike, and Arctic Grayling...
I talked to quite a few guys who have been to Alaska. One group of 4 went up and only 2 killed caribou and neither were very big. Another couple went up and killed one little dink... They all said that Alaska looked less expensive, but everyone up there has there hand out and when it was all said and done they spent far more than they had planned on.

Sounds like you had a great experience and I did some research on them, they look like they run a great operation. They are more expensive than most of the Alaska hunts and is primarily a September hunt. I am looking mainly for an early August hunt when Im not busy but I could figure something out to hunt in September.

Wherever you decide to go is going to be rather expensive... You might want to save up a little extra even if it means waiting a year or two.....there are always unexpected expenses it seems. Personally, I'd rather go on a hunt where I'm fairly certain everything is going to go well than to go on a hunt that is questionable... I've heard too many stories of people having bad experiences with outfitters. Good luck with wherever you go. Be aware....caribou hunting can be addictive!
