RE: Elk Cartridge
Schemy:
Too bad about the ' 06 - but the 7MM is great. I just became hooked on federal premium trophy bonded bear claws in 160gr. Packs good power and velocity, holds shape for deep penetration. W/R/T a 270 - My buddy just came back from UT this week - where he was elk hunting. He was unsuccessful but there was another camp 400yds from theirs and a woman in the camp took a 300+ 6x6 with a 270 at 408yds (based on the range finder) - dropped in its tracks with a 150gr nosler. I guess O' connor knew a thing or two. Choose the one you are most confident with since they are both effective, though for elk the 7mm has more power and versitility. Gook luck on the hunt |

RE: Elk Cartridge
I won' t beat the .270 anymore,it is a marginal elk cartrige,will work,can work and somtimes dosen' t work.
If you are going for the long shot take the 7mm,do yourself a favor. It' s recoil is not bad, muzzle blast mild packs a good punch.I' m not a big fan of the 7mm cuase every critter I' ve shot with it had sever blood shot. The first bull I ever killed was with the 7mm RM and it did a fine job, it went in the shoulder and blew out the far shoulder the bull ran 30-40 yds and piled up. Go with 160 to 175 gr bullets,I favored the 175gr Bear Claws from Federal on the one bull. |

I agree - 270 is not the best choice IMO given the performance of the two rifles - but shot placement is important (so is not taking a shot sometimes rather than forcing the bad one) - if he' s dead-eye-dick and uses good skills and judgement consistently with one caliber or the other for some reason, that is the one I would choose - again just my opinion. As for the story above - again, I agree - likely the exception and not the rule especially at that distance. |
RE: Elk Cartridge
Thanks for all the info. I am going with the 7mm. I went and shot it yesterday. Shot 2" group at 100 and about a 4" at 200. I think I am ready. Now I just can' t wait to get to the high country.
