Been there, done that. The 270 will give complete penetration on an elk. If you prefer to use it, by all means, do it. There isn't an elk that will not fall over if hit properly with the 270. I will be planting another one in a couple weeks with "OMG" a 270. I don't care if you hit them with a 475 A&M, if it isn't in the boiler room, it don't work.

Growing up reading O'Connor I became convinced you could sink a battleship with a well placed shot from a 270.

I later learned that one needed at least a 300 Win Mag to sink a battleship.

But the 270 will do just fine on North American game animals.

Maybe not confused, but confusing. The two bullets he mentions using fall well short as does the nosler partition that you mention.

And the bullet you put forth having 1700 fpe (the SST) is not what I would consider a tough elk bullet. Certainly not in the class with the the partion. I would not personally not use an SST on an elk.

Yes.
My dad killed dozens of elk with CoreLokts in a 30/30.
We often had to follow a blood trail for 100 or so yards but we got the elk.
Now the standard seems to be that the bullet is worthless unless the elk dies in his tracks.

I know the .270 a bit. This was my old .270. Yes, i'm a lefty.

Core Lokts are good bullets, especially big ones at moderate speeds like the 30/30 would shoot. Great elk medicine at moderate ranges!

The SST is designed to give maximum expansion on the front of an interlock bullet. I have had interlocks fragment on deer sized game, so wouldn't use it on an elk, there are just better bullets out there. I would probably trust it more at 400 yards than 50. At 50, it would come apart

And I LOVE the 270. It was the first gun I bought for myself when I was 17 and still my favorite! Killed my best two mule deer with it, one at 450 yards. Both were with the Hornady "light magnum" ammo that was the precursor of the "superformance". I do like the interbond much better than the SST

I'm not going to give up my 338WM for elk hunting BUT that Hornady ammo looks really interesting. I can see what you're saying. :D

I like their superformance line as well. I have not hunted with a rifle for elk in about 15 years (muzzleloader only) but the next time I do, I will probably be carrying my Kimber 30-06 and this ammo:

But I would not turn down an elk hunt if my only choice was my 270, it would get it done!
