I am heading out to Colorado for the first rifle season in a few weeks and was wandering if anyone here has hunted unit 74? What kind of weather should I expect for the week of October 11-15. Is this a good area? Any help would be appreciated.

We just got back from a hunt in Colorado (different area). We had sun, rain, sleet and snow! Expect anything from 80 degrees to 20' s and snowing! I have hunted that area once, so shoot me an email if interested in what I know. Will you be hunting on horseback or on foot? Outfitter, or on your own?

I hunted unit 74 last year second season and will again this year second season. We pack in a ways and camp at 10,000 feet. txhunter58 has the weather right. It really can vary, even on the same day. Last year for the most part it was in the 50' s and 60' s during the day and got down in the ' 20s at night. Our last night there it snowed a foot. However down at the bottom of the mountain they only got a dusting as the rest turned to rain at that elevation.
As far a good area, I guess it depends where you hunt. There are a lot of elk there. For the first season they not be as spooky as the second but after opening day if they get any kind of pressure your best bet will be to find them in the timber. I' ve got two tags this year, a cow and a bull tag and I can' t wait to get out there. If its any inspiration, in the area where we go they shot a bull that grossed 383 during the first season last year. Good Luck.
