Questions about putting in for ELk tags
#1
Hey, I am kind of tired of reading all these post about other people getting drawn for tags and going on the hunts of a lifetime and I always say, "i would love to do that". So, I have decided that I am. Problem is, I have no clue where to start. I understand it can take years to be drawn if it even happens so I guess I will start by asking for yalls input. Where are the top 3 or 4 places that you would put in for bull elk tags? Thanks in advance! -Jimmy

subscribe to Eastmans' and/or the Huntin Fool. Eastmans has the MRS section... but only if you subscribe... the huntin fool is 100/year, so eastmans will be cheaper.
it's still not too late to buy points in Wyoming, go online and do that! I recommend antelope, deer, elk, moose, but not sheep pts in WY. So if you want to hunt any of those 4 in WY, go online and apply/buy a pt.
ID and NM have no points, so come this spring 2013... if you want to hunt animals in those states you may be on the hunt of a lifetime this year!
probably 7 years ago? I read an article, I still have it somewhere I think... "dream hunts out west" or something like that, I couldn't afford much but my 1st 2 tags ever were NV elk, and MT sheep. since then I've been adding to my portfolio...
some states tend to be more long term goals, although some states are both long and short depending on game specie...
NM, CO, WY, MT are kinda my near future states in general,
AZ, NV, UT, tend to be long term states, for the most part I'm only building pts in these states for a hunt down the road...
to help answer your question, what species do you want to hunt? everything? sheep/moose/goat? these tend to be long term tags...
elk/deer/antelope? these tend to be shorter term tags, but can be long term too.
without knowing anything about you...
I'd consider a NM elk tag next year in a great unit...
WY- i'd buy points today for whatever species you want, minus sheep.
CO- has good mule deer
ID- if you want a chance at a moose, sheep, goat in the near future, but you're in AK?
good luck.
missed the elk part... btw there are some elk in AK... and canada...
lower 48 though... long term draws for great elk tags.... AZ, NV, UT
NM- great elk, no points can be drawn any year...
good elk you can draw sooner, CO, WY, MT, ID,
WA, OR, CA have some roosevelt and rockies you can draw OTC? or sooner, not sure about quality etc... though.
