Maine Moose drawing..

Hi folks just letting you all know that Maine's moose drawing is supposed to be drawn by the end of this June. I was finally able to put my name back in again starting this year. ( 2 year wait after getting one ) I also have a short video I jus got of my trail cam of a young bull. Now I am crossing my fingers again hoping for a tag..

Hey Phil, I hope to draw someday too. Up to about 15 NR points now. Very glad to see the point rules corrected a bit this year. I could use a tag. Striking out so far out west.

Phil from Maine 06-02-2012 08:23 AM

I hope you can as well. It took me around 30 years to draw a tag and I filled it in 15 minutes. My hunting buddy and I decided prior to the hunt to take the first bull regardless of size. I wished we would of waited but we both agreed. So we took a 4 pointer and it was great eating just the same.. So now I am starting all over again. I hope it doesn't take 30 more years however.. If you do get a tag and end up in zone 19 let me know. I live up here in that zone.. Good Luck getting a tag.

I forgot my zone picks but I fill out almost every box with a zone. Generally start in the north, work my way to the SW, then start back up north with the 2nd tier of zones to the SW again.

My chances are low, but with the new rules I will have a realistic shot eventually. Not so under the old rules. I'm just 3 years from getting my points multiplied by 10.

Phil from Maine 06-02-2012 05:22 PM

I think you still stand a decent chance though. Yeah, that Northwest area is about the best it can get here for moose hunting. Keep in mind though if you do get drawn a lot of moose has fallen over the tick issues we are having this year. Good Luck on getting drawn..

Good luck on drawing your moose tags. I'm still hoping to draw one some day here in Idaho. The wolves are having a pretty drastic impact on the herd though. As a result, less and less tags every year.

KT, I was actually in Idaho a couple days during my Wyoming moose hunt last year. Drew unit 20. Freakin wolves howlin every night. The moose as well as elk were dam near extirpated in my unit. I put in as many as 16 miles hiking in one day and found extremely little game. Hiked to the highest peak where I could glass probably 25 square miles two mornings and saw 2 cow moose. Joke of a hunt.

After drawing nothing anywhere I was thinking of applying for elk/deer/lope in Idaho this year for first time in many, despite big NR nonrefundable license. Think I have a few days to decide. Not sure what to do.

Zim, where I live in North Idaho, deer hunting is still good. But elk season has been cutback to two weeks, mostly because of the wolf inpact on the herd. Quite discouraging for big game hunters. Tough times for big game in Idaho right now.:sad0064:

Good luck to those applying!

I went 0-6 as a resident years ago.

New Hampshire

Phil,

Can't believe it but yesterday I hit the jackpot next door in New Hampshire. I drew C2 (ES) right on the border. It was my 4th choice. They posted odds already and my chances were 1% with the tag cuts there.

Phil from Maine 06-17-2012 02:22 PM

Way to go Zim! I am glad for you and hope you have some great luck filling your tag! I can remember the feeling when I got my tag 2 years ago. Now that my 2 year wait is over I am hoping I can get another one myself. I put 2 of our kids name in and the wife's hoping to have one drawn.. But I know it took me around 30+ years to get a draw..

I also wish you well on your Maine tag as well. Keep in mind on your hunt that the ticks are bad this year up this way. I have been bitten twice this year and have never in my life been bit by one. They have killed off some of our moose as well.

I think they will be drawing ours on the 23rd I am not sure it could be the 24th instead.. I will have to check when I get a chance to.

Zim 06-17-2012 06:37 PM

Only bad thing is my neice is getting married in Indianapolis on opening day of my 9 day hunt. :( I will drive up on October 13th to make a camp and scout 5 days. Then fly to Indy Fri/Sat, may not be able to start hunting til Monday. That would suck.

I'm checking flights out of Manchester, but it was mentioned there may be a couple other options.

Ya I read NH slashed moose tags from 675 to 275 or something due to the ticks. Less than half. Yikes beat long odds. I hate ticks. Saw a lot in Wisconsin on my turkey hunts by my Permethrin put the hurt on them. No bites.

Just got off phone with Maine F&W and had my application changed to points only. They are very cool about that. I don't know of another state I apply in where they would do a change so short before the draw date, with zero paperwork. Just a phone call. Old school.

Good for you others to keep in mind should you draw a conflicting tag in the future.

Congratulations Zim! (I never thought of New hampshire)

I guess we'll know about Maine, pretty soon.

Good hunting!

Phil from Maine 06-23-2012 02:02 AM

Maine Moose

Congrats to those who pulled a tag!

I'll try again next year.

Phil from Maine 06-23-2012 08:41 PM

No luck here either.. Congrats to those that did as well..

Phil from Maine 06-24-2012 07:50 AM

I just wanted to add that the Moose population here is estimated to be at 75,000. This after a survey that was done this past spring.. Here is a link to it..

I hit it first time.

:confused:Hey Fellas, I just drew a cow moose tag for wmd3. HELP!! I hate to even tell you that this is my first try at the draw. I thought I was going to have a few years to get all the info but now I have to scramble. I really can't believe my luck. Anyone know anything about the wmd? I pulled "nwk" season. I assume that is november? Please don't hold my good luck against me.

I think you are right, if memory serves me it's Nov 5 to the 10th. I drew a cow tag in WMD 6 for NWK also after 13 years of entering the lottery!!!:fighting0007:

I can tell you that the zone in question is locate way up in Northern Maine. It is on the eastern side of the very top of our state. I know a quite a few guys that have hunted it and had done well. With the total number of antlerless tags that was out for that zone you shouldn't have much of a problem getting one. Be prepared for the work once you get one though.
By the way congrats to you and I wish you some good luck!

Any idea how to find open/public land to hunt in wmd3? Looking for lodging for Nov. St. Agatha looks to have a few places to stay. On google earth it looks to be a good area of lakes and wet areas with lots of timber. Still can't believe I drew a ta. Even if it is a cow.

Greg,

I can offer some helpful info about District 3. It's a very moosey place. Send me a PM.

http://www.maine.gov/ifw/hunting_tra...ng/harvest.htm If you haven't already checked this link, it has the harvest info for the recent past years. It'll show you which towns have provided the most moose.

If you haven,t already got one of these, it'll prove super helpful http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELi...SmzKm%253AS%7E

You're in for a great hunt!

- Jay

Here's my son's bull from 2010

ps. Hi Phil. Been a while eh?:)

Phil from Maine 07-05-2012 04:05 AM

Yes Jay,

It has been quite a while.. I only wished you had some better luck in that other zone you had. I tried to help you but all those signs down that way made your hunt harder than it should of been. That was a very hard zone anyways.I hope all has been going well for you and your family. Feel free to contact me any time..

Greg has a great zone to hunt in now.. If he wants any help I can give him 2 different locations of camp rentals. One is on Long Lake and the other is over to Madaswaska Lake. Both are great locations for his zone.. He can PM if he wants the name of them.
