I want to get myself a elk rifle in the near future and just wanted to see if you guys have any recomendations? I want a durable, accurate rifle that is light but can pack a big enough punch to bring a elk to it's knees (mountain rifle). Also what scope would you reccomend for average to long range shooting? I also would like the scope to be durable, light, and accurate. Any advice is greatly appreciated, Thanks.

The new Leupold VX6 2-12x42 has my attention! low power for dangerous up close shots, 12x for long range, I have a 4.5-14x scopes which is nice, but 4.5x is a bit high for dangerous game up close IMO.

A 30-06 has been killing elk since 1910. Use a good 180gr bullet like a Nosler or Barnes, and enjoy the meat.

Then load 150gr bullet, and you have a good deer rifle.

A good rifle is the Tikka T3. Super accurate, and not that expensive.

Rifles

7MM rem mag or .300 win mag

TC Venture weather shield composite, Sako A7 stainless or Browning X-bolt stainless stalker

Good light mountain rifles IMO, without going custom


Scope

+/- 3X for up close shots and +/- 16X for those long shots

+/- 44MM objective for best "balance" in low light conditions

This ole goat uses a pre 64 M70 in 30-06, 180 Hornady for Elk and load 165's for deer. Getting older, I went to a 6X Leupold. Combi works for me.

Tikka T3 synthetic/SS or Sako A7 in .300 WM. Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42 mounted with Leupold rings/picatinny rail for the Sako or the rings that come with the Tikka.
You can drive tacks with both.

tikka t3 hunter is what i got in 30-06. i took a black bear with it at 350 yards this year. 1 shot and down
