My friend and I are heading to Colorado for an Elk/Deer hunt in November. He was looking for some advise on what bullet weight, and type would be best in the 30-06 for the game mentioned above. I told him I would ask the folks on the HuntingBBS because of the many experienced hunters on-board. Any help would be great...thanks,
Latts
I forgot to mentioned he will be using factory ammo !!

I assuming your buying a factory load, not handloading. My favorite is the Federal High Energy 180gr partitions. You can try the bear claws, barnes, and grand slams to see what flys the best outta your rifle. Whatever you try I' d stick to 180gr for elk.

Look at Federal Premium ammunition. They have 180-grain Nosler Partitions in there line of ammo, as well as some other premium bullets.
I would try the 180-grain Partitions first. If they shoot well in your rifle? You found your load.[:-]
Good Luck

see www.gun-tests.com/ for a comparision premium bullets in .30-06. go to tools and techniques, then ammo.
Recommend the Barnes X Bullets in 168 gr for reloaders. Factory ammo- Federal 180 gr XLC (Barnes X bullet) or Win. Supreme Fail Safe 165 gr.

I have used partitions and x bullets.
Both worked great in 180gr.
A test I recently read rated the Swift a frame as the best bullet.
Penetrated further than the Partition and held together better with 99% average weight retention. Also said the partitions often turned around in the medium and ended up backwards.
The Barnes penetrated a few inches more than the Swift but at high velocities the petals of the x bullet tended to break off increasing penetration but decreasing the wound channel.
I am planning to give the Swift a try this year in 200gr in my 300win mag if I can get good groups with it.

I shoot 180gr. Hi-ShoK SP from Federal, my 30-06 for every thing Elk,Bear,Deer,Antelope.I' ve shot several kind of Premium bullets and they work to I like the Noslers the best.I shoot the Federals cause they are cheap and get the job done.
Wayne Van Zole once said" Federal classic and Remington Core-Loks have killed elk for years and they will keep doing it if the hunter dose his part." so I' ve read.
