Anti-Bear Hunting Amendment to Be Introduced Today
In Interior Spending Bill
Sportsmen’s Calls to Congress Needed By Tonight!
Congressmen from Virginia and California will attempt to sneak an anti-bear hunting amendment into the House Interior Appropriations bill today.
Sportsmen’s calls are needed immediately as the amendment and the spending bill will be voted on by this evening.
The amendment, from Reps. Jim Moran, D–Va., and Elton Gallegly, R–Calif., would ban bear hunting using bait on federal land.
The Congressmen are using this tactic because legislation to ban bear hunting with bait was defeated on July 15 before the House Resources Committee. Intense pressure, drummed up by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance National Bear Hunting Defense Task Force and other organizations including the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Safari Club International and the National Rifle Association, helped to stop the bill.
The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance is calling on sportsmen to contact their U.S. representatives asking them to oppose an amendment that would ban the use of bait for bear hunting. Legislators must hear from sportsmen TODAY! Tell them to remember that state wildlife management agencies are charged with the responsibility of managing resident wildlife, like black bears, that occur on federal lands. Sportsmen can find contact information for their congressmen using the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org or calling (202) 224-3121.

Efforts to stop the federal legislation have been successful so far.

However there are still prospective anti bear hunting ballot initiatives in Alaska and Maine which also need to be stopped.
