My dad used to pack Elk out of the Vallecita lake area. Very great area and if you want you can rent horses from the folks there and either have them set up camp for you or do it all yourself or you can have them set up camp at a reasonable price. That country would be awesome to backpack in on though. Better be in top shape to be safe!
