Default Gunnison Elk Hunting, Unit 55

I have hunted unit 55 for the past 2 seasons and have had no luck due to the warm weather. both years I have hunted 2nd season rifle and because the weather was in the upper 60's, we had no luck is seeing any animals.

Has anyone out there hunted this area before?? If so, can you please give me some tips in finding some animals??? We typically hunt in the lost canyon area, but have had no luck at all.

Thanks.

Last yr in 2nd rifle while I was deer hunting they took 13 bulls out of the area east of lost canon. I saw most of them leaving on the backs of trucks and trailers. I counted 11 total over a few days, but the game warden told a guy they took 13. It's a good area and time of yr, but not sure the canon is the exact spot. Good luck.

Default Gunnison gmu 55 elk

Once again came up empty. We hunted second season gmu 55, in 2010. Saw some elk above timberline late in the evening, but still no luck. Did anyone else out there have the same luck, or did you bag a nice one? We hunted lost canyon..... No sign. We hunted in Taylor park and saw 15 above timberline. I know secert spots should be secret, but if you have some tips where you have seen more then 15 elk, please help?

You have me confused. You saw 15 elk, but couldn't get one?

If you know where they are. You should be there before they get there.

btw.. Last year was much hotter than normal. I'm hoping it's cooler this year. I'd rather hunt in a blizzard that in heat.

It is always better to hunt in blizzards than in the heat.
It is all about choosing the right Hunting Accessories

Default Gunnison Elk Hunting. GMU 55 Advise, 2nd season rifle

I'm headed back to gmu 55 to hunt Elk again (2nd season). For the past 5 years I've hunted the same area and I've killed nothing. I've seen lots of deer, but the elk are few and far between. My questions to you ELK KILLING MACHIGNES, where should I hunt? I typically hunt the lost canyon, union park, double top mountain areas. Please let me know if you can help. I'm just looking for new areas to hunt, where I might see more then 2 elk in 1 week. Any advise will do. Also, if anyone has info on migration patterns that would help as well..

Thanks.

Here's the best advice I can give you. You've done the same thing for 5 years with no results. Why do you think doing it again will be any different?

Try another area/unit. Research, and scout. Asking on a hunting forum is not the way.

Pete, I understand what you are saying. We have tried different places every year in this unit. I would love to scout, but I live out of state and cant get back early enough to scout. I understand asking on a blog is not the best way to go, but its all I've got unless I move back to Colorado. Good luck this year!!

Have you tried talking to the warden in unit 55? The DOW will give you his phone#, and most of them are willing to help you. Nobody knows the unit better.

I've become good friends with my local warden, and he's given me lots of ideas on where to hunt.

Call him in the off season. They're pretty busy during hunting seasons.
