Agreed this is my favorite time of year, love the crispness in the air as the sun comes up and drops down. Elk up here are behind, not a peep in archery season had some silent young bulls but never envoked a single response. I hear they are getting vocal now..figures archery is done! Heading up in a week with the big stick..hopefully they'll be talking then. Can't wait!

In terms of moose here last week of sept till mid october is when you can get bulls responding well, they'll respond at other times more apt to respond favorably to calling efforts. Full on rut is usually first week of october in the forest areas I hunt in northern saskatchewan. Here frost seems to get them rippin'. Many a time nothing great then wake up to a hard frost and action.

Any way best of luck on your hunt.

If you can find a birchbark cone or make one yourself that usually has the best sound. If they are rutting hard be out very early and call in the dark, especially if it's calm, they can hear you for long way. I have often started to call a couple hours before sunrise. At times I have had them come to camp when calling at 3 or 4 in the morning.

Some info on how to get the moose to come to you....We were in a new to us area here in Colorado about 15 years ago. We had a mix of leftover cow elk and over the counter bull elks tags between 6 of us. One of our guys was a bow hunter just along for fun. We found a real nice meadow/park with a small island of trees in the middle. We put our bowhunter buddy there to bugle for elk while the rest if us surrounded this meadow and the trails leading into it....In the first 3 hours he stayed in that island of trees bugling like a bull elk, we had no less than 4 moose (3 bulls and a cow)come charging into that meadow. We assume they came in to chase out the "elk" that had invaded their territory...We never did see any elk that week!
