Any elk hunters?

I have met only three elk hunters on this website, ratherbehuntin, Kdobs and elkhuntinut. Any more of you guys share this addicting passion?:party0005:

elkkill2006 03-19-2010 10:23 AM

I have been helping chase elk almost since I could walk and hunting elk since I was 14 (1984). I guess that makes me an elk hunter. I have hunted them with archery and rifle. I love chasing elk every year, but I do also love chasing big muleys.

Wolf killer 03-19-2010 11:22 AM

I pretty much live to hunt elk & mule deer. When I am not hunting I am thinking or dreaming about it.

Hurricanespg 03-19-2010 11:58 AM

Love to elk hunt! My favorite way to do it is backpacking in for a week or more.

Ha ha I am the same way.
I am a full time-pro elk guide here in Ut, I love it!

still working on getting that 1st nice bull, 0/4 so far...check back for updates this september!

course I'm full time archery nowadays which I think steps up the difficulty to take a big bull with just the bow, course I get the rut on my side vs. most rifle hunts...

skiking 03-19-2010 02:36 PM

I love elk hunting, can't get enough of it.

Robbi 03-19-2010 02:56 PM

Hello Genesis,
Well, now you have met 4. I have not yet been on an elk hunt, but, we have one booked with Bitterroot Outfitters for a bugle rifle hunt in September 2011. A good friend of mine and I are heading up to the Idaho mountains. I am already going to the gym to get in shape, even though it is 18 months away. One to many Wisconsin brats in the waistline! Better to be in shape and have a good hunt when you pay that kind of money!

Elk have pretty much run my life for the last two decades. I got a BS Resorce Conservation from the U of M because I wanted to work around elk. Worked for the RMEF part time when I was in college. Started a biz so I could make enough to take the fall off and elk hunt, then started guiding elk hunters, then bought an outfitting biz. Until you have been atop the peak on a pony in September watching the sun set to the chorus of a bugling bull, you havn't lived.

Hunter_59 03-21-2010 04:41 AM

I consider myself an elk hunter! Been on 4 elk hunts, the past 3 have been diy. Haven't killed an elk yet, should've killed 2 but that's another story. I think about elk hunting pretty much every day of the year. Can't seem to get it out of my head! Usually I get 5 days a year to hunt elk! It's amazing so little time that I am able to devote to this passion can control so much of my life!

rdb1125 03-21-2010 08:28 AM

Count me In.

I've been lucky enough to take two bulls on my first two hunts, 1st guided archery hunt on horseback out of a base camp. 2nd guided archery hunt out of a drop camp, both on public land.

This years challenge will be do it yourself pack in with a couple of friends and I know it isn't going to be easy.

Would love some feedback on packs from anyone out there. Need to pack in a 7 or 8 days worth of gear, on foot. Looking at a Kifaru freight hauler with a day pack strapped on along with multiple pods. Are Kifarus worth the $.

The saying Elk-A-Holic that' me...

infmphunter 03-21-2010 05:14 PM

Elk hunting is something I've looked forward to ever since I decided to take the hobby back up. I'm really hoping to do it sometime soon.

JAEGER-BUCK 03-21-2010 09:20 PM

Im an elk hunter. The guys from my family have made back country trips on horses every year for the last 15 years. Its getting hard on my Paw Paw though so i dont know how much more we will get to do it. We go 22 miles from the trail head. Pack in all our tents, gear, food, everything we need for a week or so. Last time i went was November '08 and we stayed 9 days. I was the only one in camp to kill an elk which was a 15-18 year old cow. I saw at least 150 head of elk every day but they were always on the other side of the river where hunting was not allowed since it was a game perserve. Ive killed 7 or 8 elk i think since ive started hunting at the age of 12 and im 22 now.

AZBear 03-22-2010 10:23 AM

Been hunting them since 1985 and have hunted them in MT, CO, NM and AZ where I currently live. I have never taken a bull but have been blessed with 4 cows...the saga continues. I have taken elk with my bow, rifle and muzzleloader.

wannaBelkhuntin 03-23-2010 11:36 AM

I chase em. Not sure I hunt em yet but I went to Colorado with a bow in 06,07,08 missed last year but I will be back this year with a muzzle loader tag for Elk and Mule Deer if I draw. If not I will be there with my bow. Elk pretty much control my life, I do little else so I can save enough to go to Colorado each fall. Almost everyday I am on the internet reading about Elk or Elk hunting. Hopefully next year I have enough saved for a once in a life time [for me] fully guided pack in combo Elk/Whitetail hunt in NW Montana.

Hi! My name it Mitch and I'm an elkaholic!

genesis27:3 03-24-2010 08:45 AM

Are any of you elk hunters wolf killers-haters?
I wish I was a killer, but for right now I am just a hater.:hit::rant::bash:

rather_be_huntin 03-24-2010 09:43 AM

I responded to your other thread but I think I speak for just about everyone when I say we are certainly not wolf fans. Many on these boards, without naming names, preach the SSS method. Shoot, Shovel, and Shut up.

Just seasonal.
:s4:
You dont guide year round.:poke:

Duh! Thats cause elk season is not year around :hit: I keep tabs on them and watch em year around though. I am not sure what you think full time is and why you think you know everything about me cause we live in the same state:confused0024:
But you are getting very annoying :hit:

npaden 03-29-2010 12:53 PM

If you really are serious about elk or mule deer hunting, www.monstermuleys.com is the place to be. It has a slight Utah slant, but it is very active and has a TON of good information. It also has individual forums for most of the western states that have a lot of good information as well.

If I had to choose only one animal to hunt the rest of my life, it would be Elk. So I guess that makes me an elk hunter.

Hunting Elk

I can be called one. The Montana FWP reintroduced elk about 10 years ago and just the last two years I have been getting tags to hunt them on my property. They are a fun challenge.

Cool have you ever hunted in Utah?

209jones 03-31-2010 01:51 AM

When u get a bull to answer, and can suck him into getting good and PO'd,and get him to go whiz all over your buddy while screaming his face off at you, and watch your stinky buddy shoot that bull after it whizzed all over him, and absolutely vibrate for the rest of the day over it.
Ya might be doing it right. once anyways.
But, getting them PO'd is definitely a blast, and any creature that responds to a call is fun to hunt. I do have a tough time choosing betweeen a PO'd moose and a PO'd elk though. Just too much fun.
