I can' t help much with elk info in that area, but I hunt first rifle season in unit 1. This is a few weeks later than archery and we' ve had everything from T-shirt weather to froze rain to snow up to our butts, sometime in the same week. Chances are your weather will be warm durnig the day and cool at night. The weather in the Rockies can be pretty variable so pack you clothes accordingly. Lighter clothes that I can layer always work for me.

I' ll get this one for you Beaverjack........Wear Wool!!!!!

That should have stated in the same day DME is right on this one, you really have to bring everything. Mostly the first week of archery season is on the hot side, but if your not prepared for some snow, your going to get screwed eventually.

Can' t help you with any specific info on Del Norte though.

If you' re not then you need to be in pretty good shape for an elk hunt. Like was said above bring clothes that range from T-shirt weather to blizzard weather. IT CAN AND SOMETIMES DOES HAPPEN. Most likley it will be pretty warm for the most part and the elk will be up as high as they can get and still be in dark timber to stay cool. You need to be up high EARLY and I don' t mean by 8:00. I mean by 5:00 at least. Be there by 5:00am not just wake up by 5:00. Learn how to use a bugle and cow calls. They do work. Bring a lot of energy food that you can pack with you during the day. You will need it. Good idea to have two pair of broken in boots just in case you do get snow or one pair gets wet. Make sure that you hae all the esseentials for cleaning an elk like two knives, hatchet or bone saw, rope, game bags, etc... It is better to " tag team" the elk when calling so the elk won' t be focused on the shooter but the caller instead. Don' t worry too much about covering up your scent cause you will most likley be sweating too much for it to matter any way.

If I think about anything else I' ll post again.

Good luck!
