I'd pick my bow first, but if I had to go with a rifle, it would be my 30-06. Close second would be a 300 win mag.

I have a 222, 243, 270, 30-06, 7 mag, and 338 win mag.

If I had to choose only one, it would be the 06.

IMO 270 and down is not enough gun for me to feel comfortable at the top end and the 7 mag and up is more than enough and kicks hard!

06 shells are usually cheaper due to volume sold and are available almost anywhere. They offer 125 gr reduced recoil loads (equivalent to a 243 in power) up to the 180 gr light magnum loads (equivalent to a 300 win mag). What more could you ask for in one gun?

With a friend to make custom ammo, and a specific rifle in mind (1903 Springfield rechambered) I would say .300 win mag. But that's only due to easy ammo at varying power levels.

IMO the 270 has more than enough power to bring em down..

It's skewed by how you interpret including bears...just hunting them, or if the primary purpose is close-range defense in case of a charge? I hunt grizzly country and am fine with the 300WM I carry for elk but if I were hunting on Kodiak where the bears interpret a shot as the dinner bell and attacks are more frequent I'd want someone in the party to have a bigger rifle.
