Default Pics of another wolf kill, showing just how much they eat

This cow was on the Selway here in Idaho. Kill was old judging by the smell. Only some internal organs and a little meat had been ate. Keep hearing that wolves eat most of their kills, but keep finding dead game with very little ate, and no sign that wolves are returning to feed again later.

Hopefully we can begin to get the wolf #'s under control with the hunting season this fall, what elk we have left in some of the hardest hit units need all the help they can get.

Maybe it was hit by a car and was just scavenged on?

Anywho, a kill with only the organs eaten usuallymeans that food is easy to find. Predators will consume the choicest part of the kill, then take down another t get the"high milage" fuel fromthe organs

If food is scarce, you can bet on them eating everything.

I am kind of wondering the thing about it being hit by car and then some smaller animal might have worked on it. But I'm here in California so I wouldn't know much about how wolves eat

Canines usually eat the hind quarters first and will rarely if ever eat the gut. Cats on the other hand will go to the guts first. I've lived with wolves all of my 45 years and have yet to see a wolf kill that looked anything like your picture. I'm no expert and I'n certainly not defending wolved in the least. However, I believe you have a case of mistaken identity.

Not sure about wolves since all we have are eastern coyotes here but the picture doesn't look like a canine kill. The yotes around here will eat the rear quarters first going in below the butt hole. Since not much is gone I would have to believe the eaten part was done by a small scavenger or birds since it was on top.

Don't know about wolves but I had a pack of coyotes get ahold of a deer I had to leave over night one time. They litterally stripped the skeleton of any edible meat in one night. I would have to think a couple wolves would work a cow elk over in no time.

I've seen a lot of wolf kills. We have lots of them here during the winter months. I have to agree with the others...that looks like scavenger eating, not wolves. Just six weeks ago wolves took down a 1000 to 1100 lb. cow moose. A whole pack was feeding on her. Within about 10 days there was nothing left but entrails and bone.
