What an idiot!
From time to time I've read stories about hunters who've shown up in camp with a new rifle and scope. When asked by the guide if the weapon is sighted in, the hunter replies, "Sure. I screwed the scope on this morning." Well, the latest issue of Bugle (elk magazine) has this topper:"I once packed in a client for a hunt and realized halfway to camp that the man did not have a rifle in his scabbard. 'It's in the duffel,' the hunter assured him. It was. Still unassembled, in four pieces: scope, barrel, action, and stock. Never been fired and shipping tags still attached. We had to put it together with a Leatherman, whittle on the stock to get it to fit, and then bore sight it on the cook-tent table. The ill-prepared hunter then produced four boxes of ammo: 30.06s, 300s, 338s, and 270s. 'Which shells does my rifle take?' he asked." Question: How does someone so stupid ever graduate from grade school?

RE: What an idiot!
WOW, that is seriously scary as hell!

RE: What an idiot!
Wow! That person probably voted for Obama...
|
RE: What an idiot!
geeze... at least they had several types of ammo to try and see what shot best...

RE: What an idiot!
scary to think that hepassed a hunters safety test!!!

RE: What an idiot!
I can't imagine I'd ever be an outfitter, but if I were I think I'd require everyone to show a minimal level of proficiency before even heading for the trail head. Be nice to know what effective ranges the clients could shoot competently.
|
RE: What an idiot!
hard to believe anyone could be that stupid. I guess those are the types that like canned hunts.
|
RE: What an idiot!
Folks like that have probably seen too many cop shows where the hired assassin pulls the pieces of his rifle out of a suitcase and assembles it and then slides on the scope just before wacking somebody at 300 yards.

RE: What an idiot!
Actually it would be a pretty sorry guide who didn't know the status of the clients gun before he took him out. I take guys out to shoot prairie dogs once in a while. To avoid wasting time and materials I evaluate their equipment before we leave the farm, I always take a couple of extra rifles and let them us mine if their stuff isn't up to snuff. The ammo thing, well thats just rediculous. |
RE: What an idiot!
The guy probably shot a 400 inch bull!
|
RE: What an idiot!
and you guys think that guy should be able to own a rifle...
|
RE: What an idiot!
Yes, even that person has a constitutional right to own firearms and I will fight for him to keep that right right up until he crosses the line andchooses tobea criminal.
There are plenty enough people that do far more harm than good with meer words yet they have a constitutional right to the freedom of speech. You need to either get on board with defending our right to firearms or pull up a chair next to Osama and Pelosi. As far as that client goes if were the guideI would have turned right around and went back to camp and handed him a fishing pole and told him to come back to hunt after he learned how to shoot a rifle. |

I believe if I was that outfitter, I would have thrown the manual at him and told him to read it an understand it. And I would not have helped him put the thing together. Actually if it wasn't a pack in hunt, I would have given him his money back, less accumulated expenses and sent him packing.

If I were a guide I don't know how I would put up with crap like that! Unbelievable!
|
RE: What an idiot!
People are just ridiculous. I have guided some folks and been guided by some folks, my guides always had funny stories of stupid things people did. I had a guy that I put in a stand once get down and walk off on 5 mins after i dropped him off. I watched him for a good hour as he walked around with his bow. theni got him and asked him what the hell he was doing. I had another guy ask me that once he is seated in his stand should he draw is bow and keep it drawn until the deer show up. I wanted to say yes so bad!
and just think some of those same people are hunting by themselves so make sure your alert to your sorroundings, they could be "hunting" by you. |

Thats hard to believe

RE: What an idiot!
Heck, that's the way i always go to camp! My gun is apart, many times in a duffle bag...Besides having it tore apart, ihave two scopes and three kinds of ammo in there...
![]() What's wrong with that??? :D DM |
If I were a guide, I'd help him get it together and give him some training. Not everyone grew up hunting. At least I would feel I sent him off safer than when I met him.
|
Yeah, realistically a refund of the hunt for the outfitter would be a serious expense. Take him back down to the trail head and out to the shooting range. Educate him and prep him. If it takes extra time, it is time he paid for and time from his hunt. If approached right you can turn an imbecile into someone competent with a little time and effort.
I do know a local guide that had some idiot fire a shot over his head from behind. He took the client's firearm away, ******ed him to camp, and the fellow's hunt was over. |

![]() What's wrong with that??? :D DM aint anything wrong with your set-up...looks like ya prolly dont have the 1 gun, prolly that case carries others or those are your bak up bullets in there....i think they are sayin he didnt even kno what cal the gun he had with him shot! on another note...the guide should have immediately turned the posse around and headed fer the range to see the guys capabilities....you can shoot or ya cant shoot....if he could shoot thats great get out there and hunt...if he cant shoot i.e poor safety skills, flinching..etc...maybe its time he get a lil 101 with his $1000-!0,000 hunt! not everyone has been brought up hunters, so for him to go out and buy a gun and supplies needed fer huntin (from my experience it aint EVER been cheap) and to pay a guide to help him along is great. i dont think he should quit , jus keep tryin.:sign0016: |

On another note, how does someone actually go through the process of buying a rifle, and not actually know what its chambered in? comon, it says it right on the barrel, hang tag, box, receipt etc... I think this story is probably a bit exaggerated but I have heard some dumb comments in the gun section at gander Mt . Like some one else pointed out , I blame hollywood. (for everything) |

Haha almost a year this post had been dead. WCL

I read a book once by Peter Capstick, who was a PH in Africa. He had a section on under rated killers, and the client got a mention there!
|
'Which shells does my rifle take?'
that made me cringe |

Sad, Sad thing there. That dude was no doubt, Fatherless. At least he hired a guide! |
I Guided in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for a few years and as much as everyone thought it was the best job on earth it wasn't. Every other trip seemed to be like the one mentioned. It was just a glorified baby sitting job with one exception: You were 200 miles from civilization with these folks for at least 5 days.
While I would make the same decisions if I could do it all over again, it certainly taught me there can be a side to being in nature that isn't as enjoyable. |
