Newfoundland Moose

I traveled to Newfoundland with 3 other guys for a moose hunt from Oct. 1st through Oct.8th. It was spectacular and I had the time of my life. The scenery was beyond description ( although hard as hell to navigate!) and the people were among the friendliest I've ever met. All four of us connected on moose. I killed mine with a Remington 700 XCR in .270wsm at a distance of 90 yards. It was awesome how the guides could call them in using just their voice. Now for some pics.

While packing for the trip I found a stowaway in my luggage!

A couple of scenery shots.

Eagle

Check out this rock!!?

Typical view from mountain top.

Moose photos.

As you can tell by the look on my face, I'm stunned at how huge they are!![:-]

Last one........ group shot.

There you have it...... enjoy!

The bow was in the equation until I saw how much I was going to have to carry through the airports. The other 3 guys brought both which was rather cumbersome and they ended up using rifles. The shots ranged from 90 yards out to 273 yards. I wanted to get a moose first and maybe try with a bow on the next one.

I never had the cod tongues but I had some fresh cod that was delicious. Oh yeah, I loaded up on the screech a couple of times as well. [:-]

Greg, congrats on a fine trophy. You've got to be running out of wall space with all the trophies you have taken over the years.

Congrats Greg... How wide was he?
Are you going to mount him or anything?

GregH 10-17-2008 07:23 AM

RE: Newfoundland Moose

He was 43" wide. I'm planning on doing an antler mount as I don't really have the wall space for something that big. However, I do have the cape for him??

Way togo Greg!! Looks a great time. Would you ever go back, or would you spend the money going on another type of big game hunt??

GregH 10-20-2008 05:42 AM

Walt, you are right....... there was a whole lot of meat packing happening that day!

Diesel, I'd like to try for a different animal that I haven't ever hunted. But, if my brother or son wanted to go for moose, I'd do it again.

I went with Portland Creek Outfitters. We were near the northern tip of the peninsula, in the northwest corner of the island. If you're not in shape, you'll find out quickly!! [:-]

Thanks for the comments guy's.

Thats where I have been Around the Port Au Choix area. I was thinking if I ever went back, I would go south. It was so marshy up there.

Greg, reason I ask where you went is I have seen that exact same rock you pictured. I hunted with Viking trail before, and it was bought out by those payne fellers. I was at thecloud rivercamp. And your guide looked familuar.

I know at the base camp, the payne brothers had a beaver, and we were grounded for days over weather, and payne boys came over and took us to camp.

Big Country, there were actually two rocks like that! They were different mountains though. Our Outfitterwas Leonard Payne and his daughter, Shelly. Our guides were great and worked their butt's off for us. In my pic they are from left to right, Gerald, Izzy and Henri ( the way they pronounced it I thought they were saying "Onrey"). If I remember right, I believe that we were just north of the Cloud river. Mr. Payne does have a Beaver, I think he has 2 of them, and we were out of some supplies for a couple of days due to weather. We survived! One of the guides, Henri, hunts south of there. It may or may not be as marshy but it is definately hillier! Take your pick! [:-]

Beaver

Hey congrats greg!! I just got back from up there yesterday, it's just totally beautiful!! I was down in the SW corner in the mountain range across from South Branch. You're right on the terrian and being in shape, there was one guy that ate a lot of Advil every night. Our group had success of 4 for 5= #5 was only going to shoot a 45"=passed up 7-9 bulls.

Beaver

thats kinda cool Greg, I bet we have beat over almost the same ground.

One big, big thing I suggest everyone going to newfoundland check out before you go with an outfitter. And that is make sure they have more than a cesna. Anything over 20MPH will ground a cesna. A beaver can handle it, and so can the helicopters. We were grounded at the base camps for 2 days while I saw the payne fellers take off 20 times in the beavers.

Just like I remembered it there Greg. I want to go back.

Greg,
change your mind on a mount yet? I have decided to do mine... was just going to do the horns, but what are the odds of going out and getting another that size in that area...
This is a pic of mine from NB this year... shot with rifle as well, even though we called him in to 25 yards and would have had a chip shot w/ the bow.

Same thing... I was just in awe by the sheer size of the animal...

I like your moose better. I would have mounted it if they were nice and brown and had good defined points like yours.

Mine looks to have been doing alot of digging.
