RE: Bears while Elk Hunting

It can happen, but I'd worry about more mundane things, like hypothermia or twisting a knee stepping over a log.

That said, my very first bugle of the '07 season brought a black bear sow on the run. She came to 20 feet before she realized her mistake.

Good info. Salukipv1. Thanks.

Then here is the next question. Obviously, I've never confronted a bear in the woods but what's better a gun or bear spray? I understand both could be somewhat ineffective if the bear really wants a piece of your A$$.

I guess the best advice ismake sure you canrun faster than the guy next to you. :D

ORIGINAL: 320fpsmathews

I hunted deer and elk in the bitterroot valley (hamilton).in 30 years hunting in the valley i saw one black bear, and it was so small i thought at first that it was a dog!! it was laying in a depression in the ground and I was about three steps away from tripping over it when it jumped up and tore off through the woods bawling like I had kicked it!!
Wow, you must have been hunting on main street.;) I see several bears a year here in the bitterroot. I've seen 2 so far this year, and I havn't even starting cutting wood.
