I use a 100 gr Nitron 3-blade fixed and it dropped the elk in just less than 40 yards.

I prefer flat shooting rather than the extra energy of a higher grain. A well placed 100gr will kill an elk just as well as a 125gr

I have a friend who kills elk every year with an 85 gr Nitron, but i think 100 is as low as you should go.
