Savage
Remington
Winchester
Ruger
Tikka
Weatherby
Browning
etc....

Take your pick, learn your gun, and you won't be disappointed. Get good glass if it comes in a bubble pack and not a box leave it. If you think your spending to much on the glass you're probably in the right range.

Yes,the scope is more important than the rifle. An average rifle with a great scope is more valuable than the other way around.
Everyone has their likes and dislikes if you want a reasonable rifle with out of the box accuracy the inexpensive Weaterby's and the Tikka's would get my attention. For me the Tikka's because I don't like weatherby's factory stock.
I own a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in a .270 and I wouldn't part with it for twice what I have in to it,so that should give you an idea of how much I love that rifle.

My choice was and still is the Remington SPS with the Bushnell 3200 Scope in 3x9x40. Cost effective and reliable.

I have a remington 700 SPS SS with a Nikon Buckmasters Scope and LOVE IT. I didnt care for the flimsy stock so replaced it with a Bell & Carlson stock. The gun shoots good.

1st off, how much do you want to spend? Everyone has a different version of small fortune. I would make sure that the rifle fits me, so head down to your local gun shoppe and try them out. The one that you want is going to be the one that you cannot afford, but its a good starting point. I saved for 3 years to get my Sako, but thats what called out to me. Wood/synthetic/SS you need to decide as well. Then most important is the glass. VXIII or Conquest at a min. BTW I just picked up the cheap 130 gr .270 federals for $12/box at Cabelas.

I have a .270 in the Howa 1500 and that is one accurate gun and not real expensize..so it will not break you and you can spend alittle more on a scope.

I've had a Remington 700 BDL in .270 for many years. Its always been my go-to rifle. With a Leupold 3-9 scope, this rifle can drive tacks. As with all my rifles, someminorwork was in order on the OEM trigger.

Have been looking at getting a 300 win mag in a Remington XCR (extreme conditions rifle) and am still leaning that way. But today I was at Scheels and they had a Tikka, made by Sako of Finland, in a stainless model that is now giving the XCR some serious competition in my selection. The Tikka is a little cheaper (around $780 versus around $900 for the XCR), but this isn't a factor as I believe in getting top quality rifles/optics and keeping them forever.

On an aside, Scheels also has their proprietery scopes, which are quality Nikons, but for a lot less $s.
